Development

What Remains of Edith Finch was first announced by Giant Sparrow in 2014 as a follow up to the Unfinished Swan. While the game was originally supposed to be coming in 2016, the developers eventually had to push the release of this new title back. The title was given a trailer at the 2014 PlayStation Experience that showed the basics of this adventure-mystery game. While there wasn’t a great deal revealed about what players would need to do in the game, the trailer was met with critical support.

The game got another trailer in 2015 which showed off a bit more about the title. This trailer showed characters, from a first person point of view moving around a house trying to find clues to figure out how someone died. The developers announced the mystery would be told through a series of short stories and the lead developer commented on the game that “It’s hard, to sum up the game in a screenshot because the game is a collection of short stories. Each of those stories is about the death of a different Finch family member and each is meant to look and feel different from the others, the way no two people in any family are alike.”

When the game was first announced, it was pegged for a 2016 release though the game has been unofficially delayed. The title got another trailer just ahead of the Game Awards in December of 2016 with assurances that What Remains of Edith Finch would release sometime in 2017. Yet another trailer, titled Stories was released during the PlayStation Experience in December of 2016. When it does release, it will be coming exclusively to the PS4 for consoles but will also be released on the PC. Giant Sparrow is working to develop the game, but it does have two different publishers. Sony will be publishing the game on the PS4, and Annapurna Interactive will be publishing the title on the PC.

Story

what-remains-of-edith-finch

The story in What Remains of Edith Finch is in fact, a number of short stories that are all tied together throughout the game. Players will move through the Finch mansion and attempt to find out what happened to various members of the family. Each room the players can enter tells a different story, and the trailer that was released for the game cautions players that some of the stories are not going to be easily believed. The main point of the stories is that it will detail how a different family member met their untimely demise.

It’s not clear just why you are moving around the mansion or how that ties into the different short stories that will be presented. The game will put the player in the role of Edith Finch as she attempts to figure out just why she is the last remaining member of the family. It hasn’t been made clear if there will also be an action sequence where you might need to keep the main character alive. At its core, the developers have said the game is “about what it feels like to be humbled and astonished by the vast and unknowable world around us.”

Gameplay

There is very little known about what aspects the gameplay for this title will include. The trailer does show off that What Remains of Edith Finch will take place in a first-person perspective. The players will move between rooms of the Finch mansion in order to start stories that will tell what happened to members of the Finch family.

The stories first start out looking as though they are being projected onto the walls of the room, but the development team has said players will eventually take on the mantle of each character as users play out the stories. What we know of the game seems to be shaping up to have it work as an adventure game with the usual gameplay aspects that go along with that genre, we’re not sure how exactly players are supposed to move within these game worlds. There also isn’t any indication whether any kind of inventory in order to finish the various stories that will play out in the game. There isn’t any detail on whether players will eventually be using some sort of combat system either.

We do know that each individual story that takes place in the game always end with the family members the stories center around dying. This is not something that can be changed or avoided. The main character, who goes from room to room in the mansion is trying to figure out why they are the last remaining member of the family. It’s a possibility that they will eventually be able to keep this character alive as the story unfolds.

Characters

The characters in What Remains of Edith Finch are mostly limited to the members of the Finch family. The players will take on the character of the titular Edith Finch, who is attempting to solve the mystery of why she is the last remaining member of her family. Other characters that will be playable will be the members of Edith’s family as the player goes through the stories showing why they are now dead. In the trailers that have shown off what to expect in the game, it does not appear the player interacts with very many, if any at all, other characters other than the ones who are part of the Finch family.

Note: This wiki will be updated once we have more information about the game.
