Wii U Firmware Update 5.3.0 Out, Adds Amiibo Support

Get ready for Smash.

Nintendo is releasing Super Smash Bros for Wii U on November 21, but side by side, they will also be releasing their brand new NFC toys platform, Amiibo. Amiibo will be compatible across a wide range of Nintendo titles, and with it, Nintendo hopes to achieve an altogether new stream of revenue- given that Skylanders and Disney Infinity, both based on similar NFC toys concepts, are billion dollar properties, Nintendo’s hopes in this case at least have a base.

To prepare the Wii U for Amiibo compatibility, they just released a new Wii U firmware update. This brings us up to 5.3.0, and its headlining feature is the support that it adds for Amiibos. You won’t even notice the changes brought about by this update (you’ll probably think it’s a minor stability update) unless you head on over to System Settings, where you will now find an option for Amiibo Settings.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, and Amiibo, both launch on November 21 in North America. Stay tuned.
