Not too long ago, the Xbox brand used to have a bit of a reputation- backed by the financial might of Microsoft, Xbox consoles were always the most powerful systems on the market. The original Xbox was a beast that ran circles around the PS2, and was even more powerful than the Gamecube, while the Xbox 360 was an extremely powerful machine that was a more sensible and well thought out design than the PS3.

The Xbox One was naturally a deviation from that- in an attempt to make the ultimate media box for the living room, it appears that Microsoft may have forgotten what made the Xbox such a success with gamers to begin with. Which is why the reveal of the Xbox One Scorpio was so exciting- when it launches, it will be the most powerful games console in history. It’s Microsoft returning to their roots.

This is something Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg himself seems to believe. Speaking at Microsoft’s E3 live coverage, Greenberg discussed how the Scorpio seems to have rejuvenated the Xbox team.

“We’re building a beast,” he said.“It’s gonna be the most powerful console ever made, and as a guy who was here when we built the original Xbox, that being such a powerful box, and we pioneered with Xbox Live, and some of those innovative games, it really feels like we’re getting back to our roots. And I think the team here, we’re all gamers and we love what we do, and I’ve never seen the morale this high. People are fired up about what we’re delivering this year for our fans, and the vision of what we’re doing with Project Scorpio. It’s a pretty special time.”

Personally, I think I am inclined to believe him- the Xbox brand has taken a very thorough beating over the last few years, and I do think that having such a promising product in the pipeline has probably made the team excited for what lies ahead. The Scorpio seems to be a return to form for the Xbox brand- let’s hope Microsoft don’t mess it up.
