Uncharted 2: A Eight Days rip off? (or vice versa?)

Well in 2006 Sony announced a game which will be totally packed with action oriented scenes. The game was know as Eight Days, but unfortunately the game was canceled since Sony wanted to concentrate on other major gaming products. Just recently it was revealed that game might not have been canceled . No one knows when this game will actually come out, but we at GamingBolt.com analyze the game and found some similarities with Uncharted 2. Now before I go ahead, I must say that ripping off a great game and making it better is not a bad thing. But I am really surprised on how these two games match in gameplay and other factors.

1. Similar animations and physics:

The PlayStation 3 is a power house. A game like Uncharted 2: Among Thieves has raised many questions that whether developers are able to use the PlayStation 3’s power to the maximum. But having said that Uncharted 2 is one of the most stunning looking video games this generation and it was developed by a first party developer of Sony. Eight Days will obviously be developed (or is under development) by SCEE, so its no brainer that Sony might actually ask for help from Naughty Dog after what they achieved with Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. The PlayStation 3 is still in its third year and I still believe there is a lot of potential left and I don’t think that Uncharted 2 maxed out the PlayStation 3. Well it might have been close but not a 100 percent.

Very similar animations are to be found in Eight Days

Very similar animations are to be found in Eight Days

If SCEE can achieve superior animations and character modeling; better than what Uncharted 2 was able to do with Eight Days, than we are in for a major treat. If you look closely at the video above, the animations of Nathan Drake and the protagonist in Eight Days are very similar. Of course the animations are bit bland in Eight Days since this its a footage very early from development.

2. Gameplay

Cover system and shooting mechnics are very much similar as well

Cover system and shooting mechanics are very much similar as well

Uncharted’s strongest point was the gun play mechanics and the puzzles in the game. Nathan Drake can take cover, pop out and shoot. He was also able to go in “Over the shoulder” view and shoot enemies. Now again if you saw the first video, the protagonist in Eight Days can take cover (with very similar animations), pop out and shoot out, and also switch to over the shoulder view. Well like Nathan Drake, the protagonist can also jump over obstacles, shoot blindly and change positions from cover to cover.

3. Jam Pack Action:

Just like Uncharted 2, the action is expected to be intense in Eight Days. If you see the video above, the truck just rams in to a number of cars, which really showcases the power of the PlayStation 3 once again ( and this is a pre production video!) and ends with a spectacular explosion. Also in the first video two unknown characters jump off to a huge barricade which is than lifted by a helicopter and crashed on the roof top of the building. So just like Uncharted 2, Hollywood style action can be expected.

4. Co-op Option:

Co-op action in Eight Days!

Co-op action in Eight Days!

Wow! This looks like a complete rip off. The two guys in the first video, fight off hordes of enemies, and they seem to help each other which is obvious in a co-op mode. Now for people who have played Uncharted 2 very well know that there were times in the game where you were accompanied by Chloe, Sully or Elena. And now the old footage of Eight Days also indicates the same thing. You are going to be accompanied by someone throughout the game.

What do you guys think? Let us know in the comments section below.

I noticed the animation thing when i first saw the test footage of Eight Days and at the time i figured that Sony probably offered it to Naughty Dog to make use of it after the termination of Eight Days.

As for the other comparrisons i think you are really scraping the bottom of the barrel for ideas here. The Gameplay mentioned “cover, pop out and shoot” is the same as Gears of War and if you go further to compare the extended options such as the hand to hand combat you can find these in Wanted: Weaposn of Fate, or even go back as far as 007:Everything or Nothing.

As for “Jam Pack Action”, id say this is just the progression of gaming, id point my finger towards Modern Warfare 2. Cinematic action is everywhere you look in gaming and is progressivly getting better with more options for designers to produce more objects on screen and game physic engines making it possible to push the bar of entertainment.

As for “Co-op”, im embarrised to even comment on this because its such a horrible comparison, but i will. Gears of War had Co-op gaming, A character to run long with side by side that provides interaction, dialog and helped progress the story.

Im sorry, im sure this article was a great idea to get some hits on your website but give us a reason to come back.

Don’t be a fool the article is a comparison between Eight Days and Uncharted 2. All mentioned is between them not go off topic and mention Gears of War which did not invent the cover system. Killswitch invented it, Gears of war improved it, Uncharted 2 perfected it. Also again, No one is talking about MW2 here. Which has cinematic experiences but Uncharted 2 also has very very breathtaking cinematic experiences. Like the train part just wow.

The very essence of editorials is to express an opinion. While we don’t expect everyone to agree with our opinion, we still choose to express it. It is common knowledge that Sony first party developers share their coding with each other. It is very likely that Eight Days and Uncharted are a result of that. We simply wish to bring that information out as we now know that Eight Days is still in production and based on the success of Uncharted. It is not a matter of hits, hits mean nothing if we cannot keep people coming back to view our site. This is simply another post to keep content flowing onto our site so we can give people reason to check everyday for new content.

So Naughty Dog used the power of Cell to look into the future where or when Eight Days is a long progress develop game and rip it off. Maybe Uncharted 2 rip the first game off, which was developed about the same time as Eight Days. Maybe SCEE was inspired by their PS2 game The Getaway, which is GTA in Europe with kill.switch’s shoot from behind cover gunplay. I always thought Splinter Cell is just Metal Gear without cyborg ninjas. Or maybe the movie Gladiator rip Spartacus off, and that all the puzzle videogames out there is just Tetris on roidz.

lol all he did was say what he things. i think Uncharted 2 and Eight Days look different too. yeah they have some slight similarities but not enough to say “rip offs”, at least IMO. i mean a lot of games are adding cover and stuff, cant call that a rip off. Also it should be “AN Eight Days” in the title right?

Wow, it’s simple speculation, and a stupid one. This “similar featrues” are in a couple of games, nothing unique. Also it’s very brave to state this, after seen some very early prototype shots and videos from ED. By the way the two games were announced at the same time, at the E3 of 2005.

Hardly a rip – off. Just because two great games (Or at least one great game and one that looks like it might be great if it’s ever released) happen to share some similar gameplay elements doesn’t mean they “Copied and pasted” it from each other. That’s like saying every game that uses a cover system is a rip – off of every other game that uses a cover system. Or every game that has guns is a rip – off of every other game that has guns. Or every game that isn’t Mario is a rip – off of every other game that isn’t Mario.

    @Chris Vogt

I understand that your trying to keep steady flow, but using rip off in your title makes it seem as if hits were your main idea. You could have easily said similarities but you used rip off which just seems a little too strong and would definatly up your hits.

But the comparison makes no sense. Naughty Dog animated their own animations and have said this many times in the past. They even scrapped what was in the first game and made new stuff for Among Thieves. Secondly, Nathan Drake has several animations for each situation while these characters are clearly locked into one preset animation. And realistic physics is common in many games as well as destructable enviroments. So your first point is forced.

Gameplay is third person with cover. Could have easily replaced Eight Days with Gears of War or Army of Two. Example “can also jump over obstacles, shoot blindly and change positions from cover to cover” is a very general statement. Second point seems general and forced.

Jam Pack action is everywhere in action games. Metal Gear, Gears, Halo, COD, etc. Third point is extremely general.

Co-op is everywhere today. Army of Two and Gears both have characters that work together and interact. Again, fourth point is general and forced.

Not trying to be a jerk but it just seemed like you guys were trying to make people aware that Sony shares stuff with their developers…and thats pretty well known and your points weren’t too good. Anyway, I did like how the article reminded me that Eight Days is back in production so thanks for that

Ripoff is a bit harsh…one may have simply inspired another, but honestly if two great games come from the ideas of a single…are we really suffering? Didn’t think so…

using a similar cover system i understand but the animations are so blatant it makes you think

obviously its been tweaked but only because they knew someone was bound to see the correlation sooner or later and wanted to protect their asses

i never understood why sony chose to not continue developing such a promising looking game with the best interpretation of a cover system since gears

guess we know now they just decided to steal all the hard work the devs had and gave it to naughty dog to improve on

    wow……..
this is the most ridiculous comparison i have ever seen.
might as well compare NG2 to gears of war while your at it.
just 1 more thing, how can you compare a game that has been released to a game we know almost nothing about?
i mean seriously sony has released like 1 official trailer and very few screen shots for 8 days.
and in fact, ill go as far to say 8 days would be better, more action packed.
its mind boggling they dumped that and the getaway for a crappy motion pet game.
i mean seriously, is this the ps3 or the wii?
if i wanted cheap crappy kiddy motion games i would get a wii, if i wanted hardcore action games with a driven storyline ill get a ps3.
i did not spend 1K for my ps3 on release so i could play around with a fluffy pet!
im seriously worried once sonys motion controller takes off, games like uncharted 2 and 8 days are going to go the way of the dinosaur and games like eyepet will become the norm.
that will be the day my PS3 goes on ebay and i move back to the PC.

It looks nothing like Uncharted 2, it’s more like Unrouted: Curse of the Missing Donut, and theres tweedle dee and tweedle dum swapping guns by throwing them, because the earlier helping of donut and icing might get the gun jamed, the only way to keep the gun working… by swapping them!

Gotta tell you.. I agree with you.. The physics are very similiar… I’m not sure why people are getting mad at your article.. you pointed out a true similarity between two games… I’m not sure that just because one game uses a certain type of physics and look, that another game shouldn’t do the same thing…. But there definately is a major similarity between movement, look, and scale.. much more then comparing uncharted to a game like gears… what are these people thinking??..
