Albert Penello: Xbox Scorpio Is What We Promised- A Huge Leap Ahead Of Other Consoles

Penello reflects on what his team at Microsoft has accomplished.

The Xbox Scorpio was finally revealed to some degree yesterday – we know what the specs and performance gains for the new system will be, but we don’t yet know the final name, release date, or even what the console looks like – which means Microsoft now no longer has to speak in tantalizing vague hints, and can instead speak to users directly about the fruits of their labor.

Speaking to fans directly on Twitter yesterday, Microsoft’s Head of Product Development Albert Penello did exactly that. Sounding proud of the work that his team had pulled, Penello noted that the Scorpio was exactly what Microsoft had promised at E3 last year.

“There is so much more to Project Scorpio than just the numbers. It’s a huge leap ahead of any other console,” he said. “Going back and watching [the reveal] video from [last] E3 makes me super emotional. I think today we delivered what we promised.”

It is hard to doubt that Microsoft did live up to its word as far as the hardware goes- the Scorpio is indeed a class apart from anything else on the market. The team at Xbox can take pride in their work. Now, we just need some compelling games that will actually make some meaningful use of all this power that the Scorpio has. Then, and only then, will the Scorpio be appealing to the general customer.

    • Mr Xrat

I’m still laughing at all that Zen/Vega begging going nowhere.

    • Reclaimer13

It’s kind of embarrassing that MS was able to create a beast of a console from essentially the same hardware that’s used in the Potato Pro. I know Mark Cerny is Sony’s lead architect and considered a genius over there but he wouldn’t qualify to scrub toilets at Microsoft.

    • Mark

      Lmao

    • Mr Xrat

      CPU a mere 200MHz faster
      Just four more compute units
4GB of the 12GB of RAM reserved for the OS

So much for that “beast.” Remember when you losers begged for Zen and Vega for months? Funny how you’ve all convenient forgotten about that – classic battered spouse syndrome.

Lol…this Mr xrat freak is an embarrassment to the human race.

    • Mr Xrat

All that spin for a lost cause!

      CPU a mere 200MHz faster
Just four more compute units overclocked so Lying Phil could hit the big number he promised a year ago
4GB of the 12GB of RAM reserved for the OS which means 4K textures are unlikely while the PS4 has 6.5GB.
      Bandwidth already red-flagged by AnandTech

You can always tell when Eurogamer lands a scoop and they don’t want to bite the hand that feeds them.

Now off you slither back to your Xgimp websites so you can tell yourself all that begging wasn’t for nothing.

    • Reclaimer13

All that damage control. Everyone is paid right? How much did Sony shell out for those inflated HZD review scores? The game is a 7 at best. Crawl back to your hole with the rest of the low lifes.

btw Scorpio has 8GB of GDDR5 RAM available for games. The Pro has 5-5.5GB, which is a 45-60% more for Scorpio. No lies will make that potato any less dogsh*t

    • Mr Xrat

The Xgimp and his bitterness at having no games, always a cracker. I didn’t say they were paid off, but at least have an appreciation of media management. They all do it.

6.5GB, by the way. There’s an extra 1GB for EDRAM for background tasks to free up the GDDR5. If you’re gonna do some free marketing you should at least know what you’re babbling about.

    • Reclaimer13

Anything I’ve read suggests that there’s between 5 and 5.5gbs on ram available for games on the pro. If you can link me to the source where it say’s 6.5gbs of ram are allocated for games I’ll gladly admit I was wrong. Not really interested in speculation. I can speculate that if the xbox scorpio is dedicating 4 gbs of ram for the os that the pro is using the same amount for it’s os.

    • Mr Xrat

PS4 already had 5.5GB of RAM for games and they put 1GB of EDRAM for background tasks to free up more of the GDDR5. I’m sure even you can do basic addition.
      https://www.gamespot.com/articles/ps4-pro-has-extra-1gb-of-ram/1100-6444675/

    • Reclaimer13

You’re speculating. Link me to the article where it says that the Pro is using 6.5GBs for games. You can’t. It’s most likely the same as the base ps4. 4.5GBs RAM with 1GB of flexible RAM. The 1GB they added was to help with the ui and background tasks.

    • Reclaimer13

      Here you go stupid.

“Half of the freed-up RAM is available to game developers, boosting the total amount to 5.5 GB. (The existing PS4 offers as much as 5 GB of memory for games.)”

      http://www.polygon.com/2016/10/21/13358416/ps4-pro-extra-ram-memory

    • Mr Xrat

It was already 5.5GB against the Xbone’s 5GB. The freed-up amount gives the Pro the ability to persue rendering higher-quality textures and providing a decent upgrade at a good price.

    • Reclaimer13

wrong again. The ps4 had as much as 5 GB of memory for games, the extra 1GB of DDR3 RAM freed up .5 GBs of RAM for games on the Potato Pro. That’s a total of 5.5 GB. I’m sure even you can do basic math.

    • Mr Xrat

      http://www.digitalspy.com/gaming/ps4/news/a501703/ps4-gives-up-55gb-of-ram-to-game-developers/

So that’s 5.5GB of RAM available at most combined with the 1GB of freed up RAM so the Pro can do what it needs to do. Thanks.

    • Reclaimer13

Only .5 is being freed up but I’m still waiting for the link that shows the potato pro uses 6.5 GB for games. Speculation based off what the potato4 uses doesn’t interest me. thanks.

    • Mr Xrat

I gave you the facts. All you’ve given me is denial and your own speculation.

Xgimp spin doesn’t interest me. Thanks.

    • Reclaimer13

You gave me nothing. I’m not interested in pony facts. Show me an article that says that the potato pro has 6.5 GB dedicated to games. Until then I’ll take the word of DF over some random nobody on the internet.

    • Mr Xrat

Of course you aren’t interested in facts, Xgimps usually aren’t.

Things are getting hot under the collar again for you, so scurry off back under your hole for another four years.

    • Reclaimer13

What’s an Xgimp? Still waiting for a link to those facts btw.

    • Mr Xrat

Facts are right up there, friend. I understand why you’re in denial of it though, you know, being an Xgimp.

    • Reclaimer13

Sorry but I’m gonna need some facts from a credible source. Not from some random idiot fantard on the internet. Especially not one that needs to log on a dozen different sock accounts to upvote his own comments.

    • Mr Xrat

The credible source is right up there, my friend. I’m sorry if your little “monster” narrative’s been disrupted. Maybe you’ll have a better chance next gen.

    • Reclaimer13

“The credible source is right up there”
I know, it says that the potato pro uses 5.5 GBs of ram for games.

    • Mr Xrat

      4.5GB regularly
      1GB can be freed up
      1GB newly added

Do the math, if you can.

    • Reclaimer13

you’re basing that on what the base ps4 uses. The Pro more than likely uses more ram for the ui than the ps4 does, the same way the scorpio uses more ram for the ui than the base xbox one does. All this speculation and wishful thinking isn’t gonna make the pro any less sh*t. Example: Mass Effect Andromeda runs at a native 900p pixel count on the Pro, checkerboarded to 1800p and then upscaled to 4k and it still can’t hold a solid 30fps. Pro is garbage.

    • Mr Xrat

Again, that’s more speculation on your end based on MS’ continual OS incompetence. I’m talking about facts here. Do the math, if you can.

Andromeda is checkerboarded on the base hardware too. Don’t hold out hope for native on your Shitpio. 🙂

    • Reclaimer13

You still haven’t provided any facts though.

    • Reclaimer13

      9 > 5.5

    • Reclaimer13

Also scorpio is using 4 gb of ram for the ui, compared to 3 for the xbox one. The pro is most likely using more ram for the ui compared to the base ps4.

    • Rebelox

Don’t trash talk Mark Cerny he don’t deserve it and yes he is a genius.

And despite everything you just said:
Project Scorpio still more powerful than the PS4 Pro!
Project Scorpio will run multi-plats at a higher resolution than the PS4 Pro!
Project Scorpio will run multi-plats at a higher and more stable frame rate than the PS4 Pro!
Project Scorpio will have higher graphic fidelity than the PS4 Pro!
I have an idea for you. Before mommy and daddy tuck you in at night, make sure you put your hooves together and recite a prayer to your lord and savior Hirai for the PS5 to release in 2018.

    • Tactical Lag-fighting tips

      Sony’s generation.
Scorpio is going to have a hard time making sales with the Pro’s price drop.
      How are those games going?

Just could announce a system a 1 year and half away like the Scorpio, sure.

    • Tomaterrrx

DF compared the Scorpio performance to the GTX 1070 and 1080. Both top of the line GPUs. Let that sink in.

    • Tactical Lag-fighting tips

I did and let the CPU bottle neck sink in.

    • Tomaterrrx

    • Tactical Lag-fighting tips

Your right, a total beast that rivals Intel’s CPUs

    • Mr Xrat

We’re all laughing at no Zen and Vega. Remember that? Guess you’ll have to settle for your upscaler being a little better than the Pro because it’s out a year later, Prince Small D.

    • quantum

lol, He has posted more anti MS rants in the past 2 days than he has all year. His keyboard is probably worn out from all the ranting and logging in and out for all is sock puppets to upvote his embarassing comments.

  • Reclaimer13

I should remind you that the ps4 had absolutely no games that appealed to a broad audience for the first 2.5 years into this generation. It wasn’t until year 4 that they finally start delivering on games and now all of a sudden xbox has no games? Xbox had Gears 4, Forza Horizon 3, Dead Rising 4, ReCore and Halo Wars 2 over the last few months and Cities: Skylines, Path of Exile, Sea of Thieves, Crackdown 3, State of Decay 2, Forza Motorsport 7, Phantom Dust and Cuphead on the way. Not to mention Scorpio will have the best versions of games that people play most, multiplats, like Red Dead Redemption 2, Destiny 2, Battlefront 2, Shadow of War, CoD WW2 and just about every other triple A 3rd party game coming out for the rest of the generation. I’m pretty confident that MS will have plenty of game announcements in 2 months at E3 as well.

    • Luke Skywalker

I don’t think forza 7 coming this year. Microsoft had said they’re not going to launch any first party games with scorpio other than whats already announced.

    • CC-Tron

They don’t have to launch Forza 7 on the same day or even same month as Scorpio. There is no way Forza 7 isn’t coming out this year unless it’s delayed. That’s all Turn10 works on.

    • Luke Skywalker

but phil has already stated there won’t be any first party this year than was already announced. he said it in multiple interviews and if I remember correctly he also said it in the ign unlocked interview. forza 7 is not coming this year, maybe sometime later in next year.

    • CC-Tron

OK gotcha. I won’t believe that until after E3. I would have to actually hear him say no Forza 7 this year.

    • CC-Tron

I know what your saying but I see that as unlikely. Especially with Forza Horizon 4 likely arriving late next year. Two Forza games in one year. Phil probably overlooked Forza 7 as a given for 2017. We’ll know after E3.

    • Mr Xrat

Oh please. Every single year since the gen started it’s been nine months of nothing then half-a-dozen rehashes and mediocre new IP at the end of the year. In 2014 the Xbone’s biggest release was a broken remaster collection. The only reason it’s looked particularly bad recently is because PS4’s gone nuts with the games last 14 months and it’s made the Xbone’s drought even more stark.

    • EmpeRawD

NIce to see that your here, as well as the usual upvotes from the same old non active bot accounts…but where is the rest of the Playstation Defense Force?

    • Mr Xrat

Probably banging your mum, Prince Small D.

    • J.j. Barrington

Wait, so what were the games that appealed to a broad audience for the first 2.5 years of the generation on Xbox? Why is it that, whatever was, is, or will be on Xbox, those games aren’t selling that well(with the likes of Halo and Gears declining compared to their predecessors) the console is tens of millions behind, and Microsoft has been so ashamed of their gaming division’s performance that they no longer even report sales like they once did without fail?

And why are you adding timed exclusives(also known as multiplats) in your Xbox list, while I’m sure you’re happily ignoring the many times MORE games of the same origin on PS4 that have most certainly prevented it from having no games at any point in time, like you claim?

  • Mr Xrat

    “Huge leap”

Yep, same Pennell that said they would never give up the 50% performance difference , yet Quantum Break was 720p to Uncharted 4’s 1080p and super lows of Sub HD 540p Titanfall 2. That was all hyped as perfectly “balanced”
