Attendee’s at GDC range from the high to the mighty. One such mighty attendee would be Bungie, the developers of the hugely popular, if somewhat divisive, online shooter Destiny. Destiny has been in the news lately regarding the great value for money Limited Edition that was made available for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One which sold out in many retailers in a matter of minutes.

Now Bungie have announced a really rather impressive figure when it comes to registered Destiny players. Speaking at GDC, Bungie have confirmed that there is in excess of 17,000,000 registered players in Destiny, with more than 1,000,000 having registered in the last month alone.

They also revealed that the average amount of time a person plays Destiny daily is around three hours. Ever since the game’s launch players have collectively killed more than 200 billion enemy aliens and that the average logged play time clocks in at an impressive 77 hours.

This is just proof that Destiny is a successful and popular game, despite the countless claims that say otherwise.

Those numbers mean nothing. Here’s what’s important. Number of users playing currently. Number of copies sold.

Neither of which they ever talk about. How many registered users are the same people making new characters? Probably most of then. How many of those 1 million new characters were from new copies or used copies or the same users? Who knows. They keep flaunting these numbers that mean nothing because the real numbers aren’t as good as people think.

How many people who bought the game in the first 2 months still play?

    • Psionicinversion

tbh its increased by about 8million… last time i heard they had 9 million people so pffft i dunno… then again you know that KermitTheFrog guy who tricks people into shareplay then deletes there characters??… defo an activision employee who is tasked to get people to play longer 😛

    • d0x360

Right but they only count registered users which is characters. They have never said how many people are currently playing.

    • Psionicinversion

yeah true but end of the day does it matter?? people are still buying the game which is still a sale so…

    • d0x360

Yes it does because registered users is irrelevant. You could sell 10 copies and have 17 million registered users.

Thats why they are using that particular stat, it means absolutely nothing and doesn’t show how many people actually use the game. It would be like a YouTube video with 100k views but 99k are from the guy who posted it.

    • Psionicinversion

Tbh as long as those sales are going doesn’t really matter

    • d0x360

There is no way to know since they dont release sales data either

    • Psionicinversion

well 17 million registered users is 17 million sales. 1 account per PSN or Xbox ID, you have 2 accounts that 2 PSN or Xbox ID

Thats why PSN doesnt or didnt allow you to change your ID incase you were griefing ppl

    • d0x360

No it isn’t. 17 million registered users is 17 million characters. They count each character as a user regardless of whether you are one person with 50 characters or 2.

    • Psionicinversion

Really? prolly still on 9 million then

    • d0x360

Yea, you gotta pay close attention to how they word their press releases. The game has unquestionably sold really well but I think the user base has been shrinking instead of growing and thats why they only talk about registered users and not active users.

    • David

      I play it. Daily.

  • Psionicinversion

an angel dies everytime the user base increases

  • For me the most interesting stat is only 77 hours played? That’s only just 3 days and a bit. Does that suggest that the average player bails after completing the story? That surely doesn’t bode well for the obvious aim of creating an addicted user base that will buy the future DLCs?

  • Plus – Aliens killed? This was clearly compiled by someone who isn’t that familiar with the game. I’ve never heard the term alien used to describe the adds at any point by either the game, Bungie or Activision!
