DICE confident about Battlefield 3: ‘Our competitors are getting lazy. We’re coming for them’

The first person shooter genre is heating up with the likes of a new Call of Duty, Crysis 2 and Battlefield 3, all scheduled to hit this year. Over the last couple of weeks we have seen a lot of Battlefield 3 and there is no doubt in my mind that it is shaping up to be a promising shooter.

But don’t take my word for it. Speaking in the latest issue of Official PlayStation Magazine DICE general manager, Karl-Magnus Troedsson sounded very confident about Battlefield and in the process warning the competitors.

“Our competitors are getting lazy. They’re using the same engine, the same recipe for building a game. At some point you need to take that leap. I haven’t seen them take that leap since a long time ago.

“We are doing that now. They had better watch out. We are coming for them.”

“Our competitors keep building very, very high tempo games. We want to tell a story with more drama curves. It’s not about pumping round after round for six hours,” Troedsson told OPM.

It will be interesting to see how this one shapes and I really hope that Battlefield 3 lives up to the insane hype that it is getting so early in the development cycle.

this actually relates to a previous post I commented on, The post regarding Gears of war wanting to topple COD. In that post I mentioned how COD seems to be taking the easy road and just making little tweaks to their game while other developers are overhauling their game engines….I am eagerly looking forward to seeing where Battle Field takes us. Destructible environments rock

  • I’d be more happy if DICE would make Mirror’s Edge 2. Sick of all these war simulating shooters.

  • Too bad they do the same shit but in less releases… Bad Company 1 and Bad Company 2 have a few new building destruction, building collapse, couple new vehicles & guns and they added fractures to the terrain. That was it. You still saw the same copy/paste of buildings from map to map. They aren’t giving their map creators enough time to develop maps properly. Both BC1&2 suffer from spawn camping issues as well as major choke points with little cover that constantly abused by defenders.

Not to mention when BC2 first released there were too many bugs. The server browser was nearly impossible to use. As well as script issues on single player.

They already have 7 expansion packs for the Battlefield franchise and it is just 9 years old. Lets release a game with 0 content and then release expansions to actually make it only halfway playable! YA!

And of course CoD is copying their same formula year after year! 5 maps on release and DLC maps for the rest of the year before the next CoD comes out at the same time every year.

I just wish EA didn’t force DICE into hard to follow release dates and over hype it all before it is even finished. Let them polish it folks!

They aren’t lying, I mean look at Modern Warfare 2, it sucks!

    Mighty tantalizing words there.
BFBC wasn’t all that great. Fun, more engaging than COD, but COD won’t die, it just can’t. Black Ops was a tragedy and it became the best selling video game ever.
Besides, we have no clue as to what Gearbox has in store for MW3.

With all the diff modes & content offered I think it is a disservice. I have always enjoyed CoD & Battlefield equally & think it really depends on what type game u wanna play. BF shouldn’t want 2 b CoD, they should just stick 2 what they do best. That being said, BF 3 looks on track 2 b the best of the franchise.
