Graphics Improvements On Xbox Scorpio Depend On How Developers Allocate Resources- Developer

It’s not a simple case of hard numbers.

xbox scorpio

Arguably the biggest selling point for the Xbox Scorpio so far is its monstrous GPU, which, at 6TFLOPs of computational power, makes the Scorpio the most powerful console ever made. However, just hard numbers aren’t going to be enough her. According to Ikrima Elhassan of Kite & Lightning, the developers of the upcoming VR game Bebylon Battle Royale, how many graphical improvements the Scorpio truly exhibits will depend on just how developers allocate resources.

“As a graphics engineer in a previous life, this is like asking, “How long is a piece of string?” It really depends on what the developer wants to allocate the resources towards. It can range from going to 60 fps, rendering at 1080p, antialiasing, to dynamic GI, and so on,” Elhassan said to GamingBolt.

Which does sound about right- on the one hand, developers might choose to use all that power towards rendering games in 4K natively. On the other, they might decide to stick to lower resolutions, but render more sophisticated graphical effects. I imagine the improvements the Scorpio nets will vary on a game by game basis, which is something that Microsoft themselves will be encouraging, it seems like.

No wonder Phil said wait and see your your games before pre-ordering.

That’s not what the meaning of the article is. Devs are free to use the power however they like.

He’s just baiting as usual. He won’t be around here much tho if Scorpio’s graphics put the Pro’s to shame aha

    • Luke Skywalker

nah, I think he will just switch the rhetoric like many of them have already done

    • Riggybro

Scorpio’s graphics will put the Pro’s “to shame” (on a cross platform title). It is literally more powerful. No one would dispute that.

    • Mark

Actually he’s insinuating that all Scorpio games may not look so good, and so Xbox forums are salty, because Phil’s no longer claiming all games will be native 4k (he never did anyway). And this is similar to the Pro. To which I’m saying, if Scorpio’s graphics are alot better than the Pro’s, he won’t even be in these articles baiting as he loves to do. He’s gonna be the laughing stock

    • Riggybro

That’s cool. I was more highlighting the word “if” you used. As it is more “when” than “if” if you know what I mean.

Was just an off-hand comment by me.

S’all good. Sumtimes it’s tough to accurately express what u mean on the net, and I can’t say it quite right. But it’s like dam dude let people enjoy their system of choice. I had to leave many gaming sites this gen because of that. I freakin hate the bias in people. I’m gonna just start skippin over people, I’m done

    • Bilal Prince-Ali

you’re insane if you think they aren’t marketing the scorpio as a purely native 4k machine for ALL games! It’s all theyre boasting about.. so if there are games that arent native 4k then MS will never hear the end of it….

And the simple truth is multiplats may look better on xbox if they utilise the power but id bet it all that The Last Of Us 2 & God Of War will be more graphically impressive games than Gears Of War 5 and Halo 6!

    • Mark

While they’re marketing it as a native 4K ready console, I think they know some devs can use the power better in other ways. Hence they’ve no mandates for 4K. Phil knows we understand there wont be native 4K everywhere. But he does know we want a graphics boost on every game. I never saw them saying “Native 4K” for all games personally, but they def do want us to know it’s capable of native 4K, I see nothin wrong man

    • Bilal Prince-Ali

of course you dont because you’re moving the goal posts loool… this has NOTHING to do with what Phil or what the devs know because we as the knowledgable do know whats realistic this has EVERYTHING to do wit hmarketing and whats actually coming out of these peoples mouths/camps… legit look at ALL the marketing and what’s coming out even on the site it says ‘True 4K’ everything about this system is shown off to be the ONLY native/true 4k games machine even though the PS4 Pro can play games in native 4k but the differentiating factor is that the Scorpio will always be native 4k due to it being the most powerful console of all time!
so you better believe when there is a game which there WILL BE, that isnt running in 4k then they will be called out and hounded on their BS and rightly so…

The Scorpio must play all games at 4k because if it only plays most in 4k there isnt a difference between what the Pro and the Scorpio can do when the marketing suggests otherwise.. so no this isnt about moving goal posts

    • Mark

Sigh. Even if Scorpio runs sub 4K on a title along with the Pro, that extra 4GB of RAM alone will allow it to stream in higher resolution PC texture packs….that’s a big advantage Bilal. I understand where ur comin from, 4K Scorpio this, 4K Scorpio that. But again Microsoft already said first parties will be 4K. 3rd parties will vary. Ultimately none of us knows how good the games will look and just how powerful Scorpio is, but we’ll see man. Peace out, I got homework to finish brotha lol

    • Bilal Prince-Ali

of course thats 100% right and i100% agree with you…. im just saying things are going to blow up hard if all these games aren’t coming out in 4k considering how it’s being marketed and how hard the xbox fanboys are pushing the Scorpio as this beast and ONLY 4k native console.

    • Mark

U know what Bilal, I honestly think that if some of these games on Scorpio are 1080p, but they are running on Ultra or Max settings, I think Xbox owners are gonna be blown away instead. I feel that so long as we see a big jump in visuals, or we get 60fps on single player games, that they won’t be salty. Whoever said all Scorpio games will be native 4K, was just trolling, and when they see how the system can impress in other ways, they’ll stop. This fanboy war is ridiculous

    • Bilal Prince-Ali

oh xbox fans will be pleased considering its the fanboy way to move the goal posts… what im saying is everyone else! this system is ALL about native 4k. nothing to do wi thframe rates or anything else… it’s pure talk of NATIVE 4k… anything less will be a joke and ridiculed.

    • Mark

Hunh? I’ve seen way more Xbox fans mention they want higher frame rates and higher settings (ultra or max) over native 4K. I’ve seen their posts in countless Xbox Youtube videos, even here. I don’t see people demanding that all Scorpio games be native 4K, the way ur saying. What I do see is them wanting a bigger jump in graphics and frame rates than the PS PRO. Ur putting way too much stock in this “Xbots will be disappointed if all games on the Scorpio isn’t native 4K” thing. I’m telling you, this is far from true, based on their posts, pretty much everywhere. They really just want Scorpio to deliver a big boost over every system out right now….and if that happens, they’ll be trash talking Sony fans until the PS5 arrives. But I understand ur rationale, I just disagree. We’ll see come E3 probably

    • Bilal Prince-Ali

you are certainly lying lool… it’s legit the Xbox fanboy war cry.. that the PS4 Pro being a garbage waste of time console because it doesn’t even do native 4k and how when the Scorpio comes out its gonna really bring in 4k because the Ps4 Pro is just an upscale piece of tech.. .you are DEFFO using hyperbole here lool… the amount of time the word “True” is accompanied by the work 4k is ridiculous and what you said is every bit as ridiculous loool… fgs the term “True 4k” is on the damn official Microsoft/Xbox website!!

    • Mark

Well we just disagree man. I got alot of work to do

    • Bilal Prince-Ali

      have fun then.

    • Hiyperion

I do apologize for responding to an old comment, but I fully agree and support the idea of lower resolution (no issues with using checker-boarding or some other technique), but with better visual fidelity, physics, AI etc. The resolution wars are absolute nonsense, at times it seems more like some agenda from TV manufacturers.

The main issue with something like 4k and HDR is the inability to convey how good a game will look like or more importantly how much better it will look like in comparison with the OG and/or xb1s via a stream to people owning 1080p TVs and even those owning 4k TVs. As bandwidth, necessary for 4k is still not there yet – as in for most of the population.

Therefore (imo naturally), a clear representation of the difference between the same title running on two different consoles should be done in a way that is clearly visible even to those still playing on 1080p, would be a good way if not absolutely needed – looking at the adoption of the Pro – to sell something like the Scorpio.

CD3 destruction being on a different scale when playing SP on the Scorpio, much like this (although not at the same level, naturally):

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QxHdUDhOMyw

Btw, although I know I’m reaching here, but considering the leaked prices of the Zen CPUs (like the R7 1700 series with 8c/16t at $320), it wouldn’t be impossible if a semi-custom variant be put in the Scorpio – and the video above gets more probable to actually be a thing on the Scorpio … that is nothing more than wishful thinking, but who knows.

    • Mark

What’s interesting is Phil already pointed out that “We have to find a way to show the benefits of Scorpio through ur TV, and simply showing a 4K version running isn’t always the answer”, to paraphrase him. So u hit it on the nail. To me, that extra 4GB of RAM with increased bandwidth will be huge when it comes to upping the graphics settings over the vanilla Xbox version. People keep saying Scorpio’s only 40% more powerful than the Pro, and they compare the situation to the PS4 vs Xbox scenario. However, in that situation there wasn’t a huge RAM and memory bandwidth disparity, just a 40% GPU gap.

This means Scorpio will have the POTENTIAL, the potential, to run PC quality high res textures. Now that, can be the difference maker here imo. Not to mention a (hopefully) RyZen CPU, or atleast a boost over the Pro’s for higher and more stable frames. That thing is havin some real trouble from being bottlenecked. Anyway Microsoft said they’re gonna render all their first party games in native 4K. I think that’s a marketing move tbh. And it may be a mistake, because again, it won’t be apparent how much better those games look over their weaker counterparts. I’m really hoping they give us an ultra settings option, and/or 60fps on single player games. What u said, I was thinkin about for awhile also, they need to show gorgeous textures, shadows, lighting, no jaggies, and higher frames if possible. Then people will be sold imo

    • Hiyperion

      Agreed.

The info is much appreciated, if I may ask, where did you find that quote? A quick look through google gives me multiple instances where Phil is quoted saying … well, this: “Scorpio is designed as a 4K console, and if you don’t have a 4K TV, the benefit we’ve designed for, you’re not going to see.”

I wonder if they’ve changed their strategies? Perhaps looking at the competition and their struggles, they’ve decided against it being just a 4k replacement to the xb1. However, it all depends on their plans with it and when a replacement (xb2?) might be introduced. Basically if they have plans to keep it around for, let’s say, another 4-5 years it would warrant good HW as it will be the de-facto replacement to the xb1 and the slim.

One reason to the higher adoption rate (if they market it well) is the stigma of the xb1 being a very under-performing console aka the “720p box”, so the fans (and fanboys) are more than happy to get a replacement. Another thing would be the 4k adoption rate, which will peak in 2019-2020 if not sooner. However, there’s another, possibly more problematic issue and that is a ps5 in (speculating) 2019.

The Scorpio is already being billed as the xb2 by various people (imo that’s more to due to it being more powerful than the pro) and the
ps5 will be argued as being the true competitor, so to have a moderately “equal” playing field and not get “one-upped” by Sony – again that is – is to push with the HW, and by the time a ps5 is a thing, the price and the HW of the Scorpio might have a considerable advantage, imo.

In regards to the ram, there’s rumors (caution, salt required) that the 12GB will be fully gaming dedicated as the OS will have another, separate 2GB of DDR3/4. If that is true, it could imply that MS is actually contemplating about keeping the Scorpio around for quite some time, perhaps, and as already mentioned, ready for even a ps5.

Btw and while I’m on the topic of ram, the Switch having supposedly “only” 4GB of RAM i.e. half of current consoles and a third of Scorpio (if not less) could be detriment to many 3rd party devs.

After all, we already know what that “infamous” TF2 dev stated about the game being ported to the Switch and more recently about FFXV not coming to the Switch because it won’t “be able to perform properly”, possible referring to the engine … creating a separate engine and then porting over the game would require quite some time (+ the more than assured downgrades), question is how much of all that work would be compensated i.e. how many copies would they sell?

The first party games are indeed great, but in today’s market, having 3rd party support is a necessity, not a luxury, but seemingly Nintendo doesn’t agree.

    • Mark

I saw ur comment in my email but can’t see it here. Anyway I found the interview. There’s 2 things I peeped here; 1) He talks about the Pro’s CPU, GPU and memory, then states “We wanted to do something different”. That’s very telling that Scorpio’s CPU isn’t Jaguar imo. 2) He mentions that “It’s hard to show 4K over the internet, so I’m learning about this…. We have to show what this device can do”. I think he knows just showing 4K won’t cut it, because of the internet. Have a read, it’s good stuff.

For whatever reason the “comment” (short novel) was detected as spam, but thanks, interesting read indeed.

    • BelAirBoss

The point is, it’s not enough power. Just like with the PS4 Pro, compromises will have to be made…..on a console Microsoft claimed was “no compromise”. Lies yet again. And the sheep keep falling for it.

    • kee1haul

      Is that you Ocelot#?

    • Sean Comer

Y’all missed the part where he said ALL ms first party titles will run native 4k burst your bubble son go hate on something else.

    • BelAirBoss

LOL…here folks, is another sucker, dumb enough to fall for Milo and Kinect, Cloudzzz, Dx12 console nonsense, and now 4k@60fps on Scorpio first party. Yes folks….they really are this stupid. Poor things….forever to be taken for suckers.

    • Dougdec92

True but a safer term is when Phil says first party games will definitely be 4k native.

    • WryMouthX

Article means that Sony will probably pay off 3rd party devs to under use the Scorpio so you have more salty posts to write up.

      Thanks, I hope so

Let me tell u something Rookie Blue, NBA 2k17 and FIFA 17 r 4K Native and look phenomenal on my PS4 Pro on my LGB6 4k TV.

    • WryMouthX

Then Scorpio will melt your eyes if you think that is 4K.

  • glass87onion

    Zen CPU + Vega GPU + 12 GB GDDR5X
Scorpio is a monster. No fake 4K for current gen games and no downgraded VR games.

    RIP PS4-PRO

    • Holeybartender

Zen CPU + Vega GPU + 12 GB GDDR5X? Really? Where’s the official specs from Microsoft? Oh yeah, there is none.

    • Bilal Prince-Ali

loool… ok …. except for the nativ 4k games running on the system right…?

You lots are still waiting for a chance to play console games in 4k meanwhile im already doing it! PATHETIC!!!

    • BelAirBoss

Poor things….they have no games, so now they’re left hoping and praying for what isn’t going to happen. They learned nothing from Milo and Kinect, Clouuddzzzzz, DX12 console nonsense…they’re muttering to themselves in a dark corner, wetting their trousers. Typical.

    • Mr Xrat

      Dreams are nice.

    • Eddie Battikha

LMFAO Xbox has a very small list of Triple AAA games, i wouldn’t even bring up VR games. If they have a Zen Cpu that’ll be good, Scorpio is just an upgraded PS4 Pro thats held back by an older system. PS5 and Xbox 2 will be the real deal, I say pS5 in fall 2018 or 2019 with Xbox 2 in 2020, problem is Xbox exclusives games list is way too small and could be played on PC and VR on Xbox i wouldn’t even talk about since Xbox has a tiny list of exclusives.

    • MiamiBeachMedMan

Boy, you sure were right about that Zen Cpu and Scorpio. It’s a shame the educated didn’t tell you it wasn’t going to be Zen. Oh wait, we did. You were just too dumb and didn’t listen. Typical.

Hey Gamingbolt, this article is a straight up joke, we’re all still waiting for the Scorpio article addressing the obvious lack of games available to showcase the new console.

  • Dougdec92

I think with they drumming native 4k, it would seem disappointing if a dev decided to go with their creative instincts and say render their game at 4k and 30fps, that would even for the purpose of debate go against what Phil said. So if Phil doesn’t want any trouble, he should come out very clearly or a native 4k game running at 30fps would defeat their goal and hence the troll train will start chugging. MS can’t afford to screw this up if they miscommunicate.
