Infamous: Second Son

If you have been following inFamous Second Son then you must have observed the cool particle effects that the game boasts of. Sucker Punch co-founder, Chris Zimmerman explained how the PlayStation 4 has helped them to build a custom particle system for inFamous Second Son and how this has allowed them to have tens of thousands particle effects in the game.

“The thing that surprised us most about the PS4 was how many particles we could jam through it every frame. We built a new particle system around the PS4 architecture, so we kind of expected it to work well, but we were excited to see just how well. We can have particle systems with tens of thousands of particles without any trouble, and have up to a hundred or two thousand particles on screen at once in effects-heavy shots. We wouldn’t have been able to do smoke and neon as powers without the sinuous curves that all those particles afford us,” he said in an interview with Metro.

The game consists of amazing powers, one of them being the neon ones with amazing lightning and particle effects. You can check that out in the trailer below:

The game releases next week exclusively for the PlayStation 4.

GPGPU physics will be a big advantage for PS4 in the coming years.

    • Psionicinversion

the sad thing is, itll get used more and more in PC games now only because consoles have caught up. The main use of GPGPU for me before was encoding/transcoding films alot faster.

    • Mikeherp Derp

Funny you talk about encoding video but can’t tell using a 720p 2k bitrate youtube video isn’t a good comparison to a 1080p direct feed trailer.

I downloaded and watched the whole 20 minute leaked playthrough video and it’s too low res/bitrate to draw any good conclusions about texture quality, etc.

Of course that doesn’t stop the dumb as rocks rabid animal fanboys from going berserk.

    • Psionicinversion

what are you on about, when has using GPGPU got anything to do with watching a trailer? i was saying GPGPU will get used more in games/game engines becuase the consoles are using it now…. -1 for making up a complete fabrication of what i was saying

  • Psionicinversion

so thats where the downgrades have come then, to keep steady framerate need to drop detailing of other bits to be able to use all those effects

    • Somebodyissilent

      Yes the nonexistent downgrades…

    • Psionicinversion

someones said that its just the lighting has changed and tbh i may agree but the lighting and shadowing made the game look alot better, without it looks very The Incredibles style, clay looking faces not much going on and generally looks not that good, there are some night scenes were theres shadows and delsin does look quite good again it really weird, almost like there an element of PBR in there where it needs light sources and shadows to look good and thats prolly to do with the particle effect for the powers taking away the main look and seeing as delsin is facing away from you and dont get to close to enemies before you turn em to dust the rendering power definately has to be with making the effects look good. Seeing as it is all about the powers thats the primary concern. Ive said before this gen of consoles is all about compromises with stuff cus there not that powerful so things have to be cut somewhere

    • Somebodyissilent

      Sure…

    • Psionicinversion

it does seriously, particle effects are very strenuous on any system, cant remember why but they just are but they can alos look very very good. Stuff in infamous does look really good especially the neon stuff so having that amount of particles it doesnt take up bandwidth it takes up GPU power thats the problem, very GPU intensive. Not knocking the game at all it does look fun im saying that as with everything it doesnt have unlimited amounts of power but this gen theyve kept costs low cus of economic climate and also low enough so people can afford it. Cus cost of living goes up whilst rise in wages doesnt reflect that. It is an upgrade to the PS3 definately but if they made a PS4 for $500, that extra $100 would be blowing away alot of high end PC’s not the best obviously but prolly have a 4teraflop GPU in putting out 8 TFLOPS (consoeloptimisation) but then again would need to up the bandwith to about 280-320GB/s (adds cost) ROPS are fine dont know how many shaders it comes with, high end AMD have 128 shader i think not sure if its that amount across the board hmm so maybe it would cost more then depends if the CPU is upto the task of feeding that much info.

Costs could sky rocket. the again if its a 5 year cycle then its fine really i reckon if they keep the same architecture and design just boost power there no reason why games such as infamous couldnt get a hig res texture pack as a download and boost an old games gfx to the PS5’s version

    • You are flat out wrong

“Definitely no visual downgrade of graphics since then! We put that particular area in sunset instead of sunny time of day so that it matches the mood of narrative better.”

      Oh well, eh?

    • Psionicinversion

just means the characters weren’t that good to start with and shadowing made them look more detailed than they actually were

    • Mikeherp Derp

I downloaded and watched the whole 20 minute leaked playthrough video
and it’s too low res/bitrate to draw any good conclusions about texture
      quality, etc.

    Just a reminder

Nothing personal, but there’s SDF double-agents playing as the insiders, or pretending to be his followers.

wouldnt surprise me tbh. cant trust anyone these days

    • Jakarta

not bashing at all, i used to have xperia and xbox. lol

lots of old girlfriends to is that why all the x’s!!!

    • Jakarta

you killed me!….you know “xbot” is a better chick magnet

    • Psionicinversion

haaving a good car, stable job your own house (pending on age) is a lot better chick magnet tbh lol

    • Jakarta

lol dang pls don’t start revealing my identity

    • Psionicinversion

oh knows you might be a normal person that actually sees daylight… your secret is safe with me :d

    • Psionicinversion

also tbh the PS4’s domination and spec sheet are also its weakness, i think people have hyped themselves up that this is going to be absolutely amazing with the best gfx known to man but its really not and when stuff like this happens and delays set in “cus they want to make it better” more like maybe drip feed them lower and lower res screenies til its what the game really looks like cus there so much backlash. the console fair play technically its strong with the buses and the caches etc theyve played the safe game with low cost options. Peple think this maybe a 5 year cycle, could be true cus it needs it to keep up with PC’s in 5 years the £120 750Ti’s of tomorrow will equal the 780’s of today. Maxwell is a very very god architecture and when that gets replaced by Volta PS4 will get left in the dust big time so it needs to keep up

    • You are flat out wrong

      lol another butthurt Xbot.

Off you go back to misterxmedia’s crappy blog. 🙂

    • Jakarta

      Woof! woof

    • You are flat out wrong

      About what I expected. 🙂
