Witcher 3 Will Not Use Any Special Graphical Features of PS4 & Xbox One, Will Not Use Hardware MSAA

CD Projekt aiming for the best possible experience across all platforms.

Witcher 3

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a gorgeous looking game and CD Projekt are trying to deliver the same experience across the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Despite their similarities, the PS4 and Xbox One do have some decidedly unique hardware features. How will CD Projek be taking advantage of the PS4’s unified GDDR5 memory architecture and whether they will be developing specific graphical features which they might have found to be possible only on the PS4?

“We always want to provide the best possible experience to all our gamers regardless of the platform and so we are not aiming to develop special graphical features for any of them,” Balazs Torok, Lead Engine Programmer said to GamingBolt.

And regarding the kind of anti-aliasing technology they will use for PS4 and Xbox One versions, Balazs stated that they won’t be using hardware based MSAA. “We are still exploring some options regarding anti-aliasing but we are sure that it will be some kind of screen space anti-aliasing solution and not hardware MSAA,” he said.

Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt is due for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC and releases in February 2015. For more on the game check check out our hub page here.

Well as long as it looks as good as we all hope it to then there will not be any issues….

  • spideynut71

Good…this essentially means they’re sticking with their PC roots, and developing the best possible version there first, then down-porting to consoles , as they should be.

    • YOUDIEMOFO

      Let us all hope…..

    • Psionicinversion

they definately are have you seen the uncompressed witcher 3 vid?

    • YOUDIEMOFO

      Linky please……?!

    • Psionicinversion
    • YOUDIEMOFO

Yes very nice…… But I will make sure of uber “support” on systems like mine before purchasing another game that is for sure….. Sad to have games completely broken upon release.

    • Kamille

maybe you need to read this again because it says nothing like that lol:

“We always want to provide the best possible experience to all our gamers regardless of the platform and so we are not aiming to develop special graphical features for any of them.”

    • spideynut71

Superior graphics and performance aren’t a “special feature” for PC.

    • justerthought

Of course the high end PC version will be superior if you have the right hardware. What are you worried about. There is no reason to think otherwise unless your comments are for your own self assurance because you fear your hardware does not have the required grunt.

And yes ‘Superior graphics and performance’ are special features. You need ‘special’ PC hardware to generate the ‘special’ graphics and ‘special’ performance, so don’t be getting all complacent and think it is your right to have the luxury. If your PC is not up to spec you loose that right and get to get sub par performance that is not even as good as the PS4 version.

The main concern is how the game will look on PS4 and XB1. The PS4 will make a good fist of the open world due to the GDDR5 RAM, but the XB1 is going to struggle when rapidly loading stuff into RAM on the fly.

    • Psionicinversion

if he said there are tiny differences means PC may not be pushed as hard as we all thought

    • justerthought

Tiny differences is dev speak for “big difference but we don’t want to put people off buying the game.” We hear it all the time with multiplats for PS4 and XB1 as they claim tiny differences, but in reality the difference is huge.

Yes it’s diminishing returns, but that’s where we are right now with gaming graphics. You have to have a huge addition of hardware power to get a small addition in graphics quality.

    • Squinty

Sounds more like they’re going for parity rather than sticking to their PC roots.

  • Mark

Yeah, I think first parties r the ones who’ll use our systems’ best features. However, COD:AW and Star Wars Battlefront melts my brain as 3rd party games.

  • TI_21

Post the whole interview already, these non news are stupid…

  • Stephane Vaille

That’s not so surprising. Both consoles are using mid-range down clocked components (~800Mhz instead of ~1Ghz) so they probably prefer to optimize the game for high end PC. This is were the game amazed us, even if I enjoy my 360 version ^^

  • Psionicinversion

the only game that will use MSAA is The Order 1886 cus wiht the power saving of drawing 20% less horizontal lines i.e. 1920 x800 frees up enoug to use MSAA. No other PS4 game that is gunning for high fidelity will ever use MSAA. its simply not powerful enough, and it prolly hasnt got enough bandwidth to do both. The witcher 3 at max settings PC is going to show exactly what a pile of trash these consoles are

    • demfax

Look at the AA SSM managed with God of War 3. They will get there.

    • Failz

GoW3 is nothing more then a linear hack and slash. PS4 and XB1 are weak and will never match the true might of PC gaming. Those who thought consoles have caught up because the new systems are delusional. PC games were able to do MSAA x 8 at 1080p and 60 frames for years and the PS4 and XB1 cant even do 1080p with MSAA x 1 and that’s not including the new 4k feature PC games are getting PC games are future proof. Sorry but if you brought your console thinking you have power then LOL.

    • demfax

You’re moving goalposts. He said 1080p w/ MSAA. That’s not a hard target for PS4 to hit.

PS4 has graphics performance and GPU architecture comparable to a Radeon HD 7850, which can do 1080p 30 fps with 2-4x MSAA on most games at reasonable settings.

      They will get there.

    • Failz

Lol yeah right. These console only use 4 – 5 gigs of ram and there CPUs are mediocre. You seem to think GPUs is all you need. This is why you don’t build PCs or Hardware.

    • demfax

The CPU+GPGPU is adequate. I built my PC and plan on playing Witcher 3 on it, thanks.

    • Failz

Considering in your previous statement you only mention GPU architecture, sounds like you only read media articles. Keep trying console peasant, I know who you are.

    • demfax

I’m sorry you’re upset that someone understand technology better than you.

    • Psionicinversion

a 7850 will struggle with MSAA with these new games tbh theyll have to switch to temporal smaa cus there not powerful enough for MSAA and decent settings.

  • Egla

What games have special graphical features developed just for the console? The difference between the PS4 and Xbox1 will be in resolution and/or framerate, quality of effects like AO, shadows etc.

One console will not have special effects that the other will not have, the level of detail in the features will most likely be different because of the hardware gap.

  • SickSilvo

Hmm.. Generally speaking here (as in not aimed at this game exclusively): If one platform is stronger than other in terms of specs then why not tap into that “power” asuming that there are unused sources. Seems like PR talk to me.. PC > PS4 > X1 – all of them have something unique to offer, This whole parity thing doesn’t sit well with me, but that’s just me.

    • Failz

Because optimising cost money and resouces. If you want superiour visuals dont game on consoles.

    • SickSilvo

I am a gamer first,my platform of choice is and always was PC. Getting PS4 this holiday and hoping to have enough “f.. money” by 2016 for X1 (if M$ decides to be decent Co. by then) If they stick to their misleading ways well, I’ll put that money towards new GPU probably or whatever piece of HW is most beneficial to me at that time. And this whole “oh this person plays on platform that is not same as mine so he can f.. off” is childish.

    • Failz

Oh that’s childish.. So having a hatred for a corp for petty reasons isn’t childish? You actually think any corp is good? You have no idea how much these corps twist and turn to make you believe you are buying the right product. I am sure MS don’t care if you game on PC since majority of there games are on PC as well and if you don’t like MS then don’t play there games. I don’t play games because I love companies, I play games because I love games.

    • SickSilvo

I don’t hate MS, I do however have a problem with them lying to (potential)/customers.UBI I do hate – no lie. As for “all co. do this” why yes they do – some are more obvious than others and the fact is that MS gets caught alot more. If you hang around big gaming forums you face astroturfing on a monthly basis, last years damage control was hilarious to watchI do vote with my wallet and don’t upvote my posts like “some” people (:

    • justerthought

Superior to what? Superior is relative. As long as you’re not on the bottom you are always superior to something. The crucial point is whether it is good enough to allow you to play the game smoothly with high quality graphics, not whether you have the best and being superior to everything else. Typical PC master race talk. Some PC hardware is superior to other PC hardware.

The PS4 is running games perfectly on a HD TV in very high quality, without leaving you wanting more or wishing you had some nice piece of eye candy exclusive to the PC version. PS4 is good enough. ‘Good enough’ is not a concept the master race is use to because the only concept they can handle is ‘superior’. But superior is meaningless. I know it hurts, but there is always someone with a bigger penis than yours …lol

  • Failz

The Witcher 3 will be the game to own on PC same with Project Cars. Anyone that thinks other wise needs to accept the truth.

    • demfax

Your opinions aren’t “the truth”, no matter how badly you want them to be.

Owning a good PC and playing Witcher 3 on it doesn’t entitle anyone to call names and pretend their opinions are “the truth”.

    • Failz

      Are you denying it?

    • demfax

      Don’t deny THE TRUTH!!1

    • Failz

The truth and fact is PC gaming is the way to go if you want the best out of your games, not some shredded up torn down game that gets optimised for consoles. Truth hurts.

    • John Doe

You’re a little too obsessed with your PC plastic. Seek help.

    • Failz

Except my PC isnt assembled in China

    • Some Guy In A Waistcoat

The truth and fact is whichever platform any one person is getting the most fun out of personally is the way to go.
Subjective opinion is never a good substitute for objective fact, and when it comes to entertainment value and a user experience, there is no such thing as an objective fact :P

  • Some Guy In A Waistcoat

As long as it plays well, has a half-decent narrative, and doesn’t make my eyes bleed, then that’s enough for me regardless of what I’ll play it on.

  • Kos-Mos11

I love PCs and all but I’d would rather own the physical copy than a digital one honestly.
