Xbox Head Phil Spencer Responds To Sony’s Comments About Cross Platform Play, “The Door Is Open”

‘If even Nintendo is on board…’

Cross platform play has become a huge talking point right now, with even Nintendo being on board. This whole issue started when Microsoft announced that Minecraft across all platforms would become unified, which would mean not only that all players on them would be able to play with each other, but also that all content updates would become unified, and all versions of the game would be getting improvements like better graphics and infinite worlds.

Except it’s not all platforms- Sony and PlayStation are very specifically sitting this out, as they are all cross platform play in general. The reason, according to them, is because they ‘have a responsibility to the children’ playing online on their systems (which makes no sense whatsoever, as Psyonix, the developers of Rocket League, pointed out earlier today).

Xbox head Phil Spencer who also owns Minecraft, also sounded off on Sony’s response to the debacle so far in an interview with Giantbomb. “The door is still open. I would love for players on all platforms to stay connected,” he said, before adding what he thought of Sony’s response. “I will jump on another grenade for this one, but… the fact that somebody would kind of make the assertion that somehow we’re not keeping Minecraft players safe, I found not only from a Microsoft perspective, but a game industry perspective, I don’t know why that has to be the dialog. It doesn’t seem healthy for anyone. And I feel we can always do better with everything we do. I feel great our relationship with Minecraft… I just really found the whole discussion around safety with our game, as if we wouldn’t make it the top priority… frankly, with our parental controls on Xbox Live, and everything else we have done, we have shown that’s extremely important to us as a platform.

“And frankly, if Nintendo is on board… yeah, but the door is open. I’d love all Minecraft players to have the full Minecraft experience, and we take the safety of Xbox Live and of all our players really seriously. It’s incredibly important to our team.”

Everything he said, all of it, is 100% accurate. I am glad more and more people are calling Sony out on this cross platform play thing- I want to see them back off from this frankly regressive stance, and enable the kind of cross platform play that is sure to be the wave of the future.

Minecraft’s player installed base is around 100.000.000 across all platforms, more or less, and cross-play isn’t strictly necessary, but for less famous games, for new IPs, for indie games that cannot rely on huge marketing, cross-play is of vital importance.
Hopefully Sony will change its mind on this matter.

I agree with entire article. Sony needs to step up, not only with this but with how we can return our digital games the same way PC players can and soon to be Xbox players.

    • crazy_black_man- ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

More entitlement. I thought you were old school. You made the choice to buy that shyyt digitally like an adult. You get to keep it like an adult.

    • Old Skool

Kick rocks moron! All you do is stalk Microsoft articles like a pathetic fool. I don’t even think you game at all cuz you never speak about games in general or your interest in any of them. It’s all about Microsoft hate to the 3rd degree with you.
I give props and respect when due, and Microsoft has been doing good consumer friendly options for their gamers lately, even though they messed up at first.
I buy multiplayer games digitally ,single player games physically. And why wouldn’t anyone want those features on your platform when other platforms offer it? They’re convenient and consumer friendly, but not to pathetic adult fanboys i guess.

  • Gamez Rule

Sony needs to look into this more than what they have done so. The reasons for rejection could be more involved, but Sony should look into ways that allow everyone to play across other platforms like XBL and Nintendos network.

I dunno bruh. It may have been because of the previous hacking incident. It could be because of future liability if something were to happen. It may just be the spirit of competition. Sony may be simply making the case that if gamers want to play with their friends on Xbox, they should buy an Xbox. I know why MS is doing it. Theyre just desperate to keep subscribers on their platform and not have them split their gaming time on other, more successful platforms. I think MS and Nintendo both have the exact same dilemma, competing in the console space against Sony. Its no small wonder that they would do this. At the same time, Sony has a lot of games in the works, and may not want to minimize their profits by making crossplay on select games a priority where it affects the sales, and success of other game releases. Remember, the PS4 is about way more than just multiplayer gaming. Sony knows their platform has way more to offer than just multiplayer gaming. That will continue to be Microsoft’s biggest mistake with their new console. They have no comparable single player games to challenge Sony with. Anyhoo…I’m rambling again…

    • Gamez Rule

I see what you mean, as we all know that nothing online is safe even when networks are classed as safe.

Example when *Microsoft failed to warn victims of Chinese email hack* and the news about the *Chinese ‘gaming service’ company is hacking Xbox accounts* ( see links )

Maybe Sony could get something put in place to allow cross platform gaming on these games mentioned that will please everyone?

  • TwoLiterSoda

Sony dropped the ball for sure and they know it. Just listen to the floundering reasoning they are giving, such a joke. Just admit you don’t want cross platform play, don’t make such asinine excuses, and it would have been a lot less of a fallout.

    • crazy_black_man- ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

You make it seem like they absolutely HAVE to offer it, as if under a court order or something. The truth is that it is their platform to manage however they please. There are more than enough PS4 players gaming online everyday that this constant push to play games with the Xbox community sounds like Sony offering the Xbox community charity at this point. Do you not hsve enough people to play whatever with on Xbox Live. I mean seriously, what’s the point of it all? It seems to me that people already made a choice when they bought a particular console. Maybe its just me but it seems to me that Sony doesnt have to have a damn excuse to not want ri share platforms with the competition. All this sudden gamer entitlement this gen is just pla in silly.

    • TheNorthFace

dude sound like one of sonys lawyers calm down kid. the fact is somy doesn’t want to spend on resources when they can’t make money on it. also they are greedy because they don’t have the resources that ms has, cross play is the future so we can truly have fanboy battles lol

but seriously cross play should be standard so that you can enjoy your favourite game on any platform, its an amazing move for the gaming industry

    • crazy_black_man- ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

More ignorance and entitlement. How many consoles and online networks have your name on them? How many have you designed? So you’re just going to dictate the standard now? Go sit down.

    • Anthony Gluck

And you realize Sony has wanted cross play for years and have been open to it longer than Microsoft right

    • Holeybartender

Oh,please. It would be the exact “fallout” wether Sony gave a “to your satisfactory” excuse or not. It’s the same exact “fallout” you hear from them crying about Sony not offering backwards compatibility. Sony hasn’t dropped anything, a fraction of PlayStation owners care about cross-play as much as they care about backwards compatibility and as before it’s not worth investing Sony’s interest.

  • Holeybartender

He only mentioned the children issue because Minecraft is a child’s game, the real issue is security and Sony will have no control over the security of Microsoft’s cross-play feature. Sony has an obligation to it’s customers and we signed with Sony to provide security not Microsoft. Plus,Microsoft will have total control over the cross-play feature and a “worldwide and royalty-free intellectual property license to use your content to make copies of,retain, transmit, reformat, display and distribute via communications…” which means they would have control over Sony on any streaming service or advertisement they provide. Sony won’t sign up for that and I don’t blame them.

    • crazy_black_man- ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

You make an awesome point. MS owns Minecraft. Of course they want this. It only helps them.

WOW The hypocrisy, lies and misinformation being spread by Pramath and the morons in the comment section is enough to make everyone dumber.

Here is a blatant lie from Pramath.

“Except it’s not all platforms- Sony and PlayStation are very specifically sitting this out, as they are all cross platform play in general.”

Sony has many crossplatform games and they’re still supporting it. They’ve been supporting it longer than Microsoft. Microsoft is the one who tried blocking ALL cross platform play for many years and Pramath never made a fuss about it. Microsoft recently backtracked when Rocket League became popular and Xbone started losing in sales.

It seems Sony simply doesn’t want cross platform play with Xbox for obvious reasons nor is cross platform play with Xbox something that benefits PlayStation owners.

    A. Microsoft is getting a taste of their own medicine.

    B. Microsoft is forcing Switch and PC owners to make an Xbox Live account in order to play Minecraft cross play. This can be seen as rather shady and this could be what Jim Ryan is talking about. It looks like Microsoft is using Minecraft as a trojan horse to boost their own network user numbers and Sony doesn’t want to force their users to take part in it.

Jim Ryan never said Microsoft couldn’t protect children but of course Phil Spencer would say this. It is interesting Pramath picks quotes from Jim Ryan out of context while blindly believing the PR lines from Phil Spencer who is known for lying constantly and contradicting himself countless times.

The questions you should be asking are why does Microsoft require people to make an Xbox Live account to play Minecraft on Switch? Microsoft could easily allow PS4 players to at least play with PC servers to honor Sony’s request. Why is Microsoft trying to force Xbox into the mix?

Sony supports cross platform play with many PC games but Sony doesn’t need to open their network to the agenda of Microsoft. And the people complaining about this are either ignorant or people with agendas trying to use lies to mislead their readers.

    • Holeybartender

“Jim Ryan never said Microsoft couldn’t protect children but of course Phil Spencer would say this.”

It’s the same level of shadiness as with the whole “Sony is holding back Bungie from releasing Destiny 2 at 60 fps” idiocy from Paul Tassi at Forbes. Spencer and Tassi should have lunch and see what other lies they can concoct.

You’re right. The misinformation from the morons in the comment section does make people dumber.

  • JudgeJuryExecutioner

maybe jim ryan was onto something when he said microsoft couldnt protect children

    • Holeybartender

      Lmao,totally forgot about that.

  • Nemesis

Pramath is an idiot liar. What an absolute toxic example of gaming journalism.

I wonder if this would be an issue if m$ had never moneyhatted minecraft in the first place.

  • TheNorthFace

first ea access and now cross play… what a joke, the only features they will add is a ‘stability update’

  • Mavericks

    Sony’s comment was very disrespectful.

You can blame Nintendo for plenty of things but never, ever criticize them for not taking care of child protection on their platforms, the same goes for Microsoft.

So, here goes a charade: I’m a japanese console gaming maker and my online service was hacked, leaking sensitive information about my costumers and I’m not Nintendo. Who am I?

    • Anthony Gluck

Umm sony can say whatever they want it’s the platform and they don’t have to do anything. They have been pushing cross platform longer than Xbox… i.e.: ffxi ffxiv rocket league etc
