For all the bile and venom – all justified mind you – that the world has poured on the Xbox One, it seems that retail response will be one of the things that doesn’t agree with us: Blockbuster has announced that the Xbox One has broken all previous records for pre-order launches in the retailer’s history.

Head of games James Morton stated that, “We are delighted by the huge number of pre orders that we have received so far for the new Microsoft console. At Blockbuster, we have a fantastic array of adrenaline-fuelled console games for sale or rental. Our expert staff know gaming and they know consoles and these pre-orders are testament to our customers’ trust in us as a leading gaming retailer.

“With Sony releasing the PS4 in the near future, the next few months are going to be an exciting time for our staff and customers at Blockbuster and we can’t wait to hear more details from both Sony and Microsoft at the E3 Expo next month.”

Surprised?

Really? Have you read Paul Thurrot’s article? I agree with him that this is another confusing “throw eveything in” Microsoft product that while he and others will buy on launch day won’t appeal to the mass market and leave the average consumer asking what is it?

No doubt this will appeal to the xbox Fanbois and they’ll buy at launch. But can it be sustained? I think not for many of the reason already published. While we have a three consoles but as a family of casual gamers I just don’t see us buying into this. Of course it seems to be more about the TV than the games and frankly we cut the cord and no longer watch much TV so this isn’t a major selling point for us.
