Xbox One Scorpio May Be Using AMD’s Vega/Ryzen CPU

The most powerful console ever made, indeed.

We already know that Microsoft are planning on making the Xbox One Scorpio the most powerful console ever made- but so far, apart from vague and ambiguous targets, Microsoft have only stuck to discussing the system’s GPU performance (which we know will be an admittedly impressive 6 TFLOPs).

However, it seems like Microsoft may be going all out on the CPU front, too- according to a picture taken by someone on NeoGAF at AMD’s CES booth, it looks like the Scorpio may be using the truly impressive Vega architecture that AMD just debuted for their CPUs, including the fresh Ryzen. If this is true, the Scorpio will have literally one of the newest, most advanced CPU chipsets within it, and far beyond most gaming PCs on the market. That, coupled with its GPU, is likely to make it a truly impressive beast of a machine.

Of course, it is unclear how Microsoft will sell such a device at mass market prices (will they swallow a loss like they did with the Xbox and Xbox 360, or pass the costs on to customers?), or whether such power even has any meaning given that all Scorpio games are also mandated to run on the standard Xbox One- but for fans of technology, it seems like the Scorpio may have a lot to offer.

looking good, no more old tech in new consoles.

Now this is a console I will be purchasing. Back compat and 4k bluray to boot.

      !!!

  • Jimmy DoneGood

The power of Scorpio can’t be denied. Its a beast

    • Mr Xrat

Only thing that can’t be denied is the stupidity, malignancy and desperation of Xgimps.

You want an actual beast and not some greasy MS employee promise? Build a PC. You’ll be able to play those worthless games at 4K right now.

    • IToldYouSoAlready

I did build a very powerful gaming PC, it’s a real beast. It plays Minecraft, Peggle and Undertale really well. Other than that, I play just about every game on my Xbox One S. I even bought a few UHD 4K movies to watch on my 4K TV, they are incredible. Even my normal BluRays look fantastic on it. The Xbox One S is just the best all-rounder. My consoles are so much easier and quicker to use than my gaming PC and a lot more portable, I can easily move the Xbox One S around to any room in my house.
It’s probably three or four months since I switched on my PS4. It’s a great machine, but I’m just not interested in Japanese Indie games. Uncharted was Okay, but Tomb Raider was much better, (and Lara has a much nicer rear end, an added benefit).

    • Evil_Annie_2015

What are you talking about? You don’t even own a PC, otherwise you would not be playing on a checkerboarding machine that needs secret sauce..:)

    • Mr Xrat

      “B-but Playstation!!!”

      Every time.

Poor little Shitpio, totally redundant. 🙂

    • Evil_Annie_2015

Then do not talk about 4K if all you know is checkerboarding..lol

    • Mr Xrat

      Never said anything about PS…lol

    • Evil_Annie_2015

I said checkerboard, and you immediately mentioned PS….lol

    • Mr Xrat

You know what speech marks are, right?

    • Evil_Annie_2015

From checkerboarding to speech marks..It starts to sound so familiar, I wonder why..;)

    • Mr Xrat

      Take your medicine.

    • Evil_Annie_2015

I guess I pushed the right button..:)

    • Tactical Lag-fighting tips

Just like the power of the upcoming PS5, it’s more of a beast

    • Hackeysacked

Sony themselves don’t even know if there will be a PS5. Even so PS5 will now be out anytime soon…..the pro just came out.

    • Tactical Lag-fighting tips

Just like the Scorpio isn’t out any time soon

    • Hackeysacked

It’s the year of the Scorpio guy.

    • Tactical Lag-fighting tips

or year the pro’s price cut during it’s launch makes a cute try to gain sales.

      Salty “balanced” downgrades incoming?

    • Hackeysacked

The Ps4 pros performance will be a cute try when next to the Scorpio.

    • Tactical Lag-fighting tips

Much like PS5 will make the Scorpio look weak.
Even with the Kinect 3 reserve unlocked later

    • Hackeysacked

      What Ps5?

    • Tomaterrrx

Scorpio is out this year, douchebag

    • Tactical Lag-fighting tips

Great, PS5 is going to crush it to pieces

    • Eddie Battikha
    • Tactical Lag-fighting tips

      Nice stuff

  • Grifter17

I will never understand all the discussion about the cost of Scorpio considering AMD has for a very long time been the “best bang for your buck”

I expect that the Ryzen architecture will be VERY price competitive

    • Troy Marcel

Also helps MS can buy in bulk

    • Learned Handgun

Which in turn helps AMD produce enough to reduce the cost of production and make more profit on chips sold elsewhere. Economics of scale at work.

    • Troy Marcel

The more you produce the cheaper it gets, which helps everybody

  • Mr Xrat

Oh look, it’s the same slide as the New Horizons presentation a fortnight ago.

Shitpio speculation should make up for the lack of games Xgimps will be suffering with (again!) for at least the next six months.

    • This Guy

When Trump isn’t trolling Twitter, he’s here trolling Xbox. Sad…so very sad.

    • quantum

This guy is way dumber than Trump. At least trump doesn’t upvote all his own comments with his dummy accounts Tier 2 stinker, jamie moron, 343i apologist etc LMAO

    • Fweds

His main name when he posts on Sony news is “Revolver ocelot” he uses an old Upvote Bot.
He always uses the bot to Upvote any negative Xbox comment or a positive Sony one, notice the same old ghost names as the bot needs a proxy for each name.

He searches out any Xbox news he can negative post on or try and take the news off topic.

He Seems to have all the hallmarks of a true Sony Lapdog.

    • Mark

      Or an astroturfer

    • quantum

The guy has some serious mental issues. I don’t think he understands that no matter how many fake upvotes he gives himself, he still talks complete bollocks.

    • Fweds

Your actually calling an unreleased electronic device a silly name !
Do you feel someway threatened by it ?

  • Luke Skywalker

hmm, interesting. it’s still not a confirmation though since it’s the same slide as the amd presentation from not too long ago. the guy guy who took the pic must of just caught it the display at the right time

    • Mark

What gets my hopes up is seeing the “New Horizon” theme right below “Project Scorpio” on the screen, possibly referring to Zen. Ultimately we gotta wait, but the speculation is interesting

    • Luke Skywalker

I feel like it’s 2013 all over again when all the speculations were running all over the place. I don’t think Microsoft will have the luxury to wait for E3, they better do a reveal soon to either confirm or keep people’s expectations in check. However doing so they run the risk of opening up too early to the competition but if it’s Vega and zen then the info would curb the sales of current consoles, both their’s and the competition. If it’s not zen and vega then the news might just curb their only their current console sales. I don’t know but I think they need to do something fast because speculations don’t just blow over, they blow up.

    • Mark

There’s a rumour that they’re gonna do a Scorpio show before E3, and they should. Excite people about the hardware, then show them the games at E3…

    • crazy_black_man-

      LOL. Uh games? What games?

    • Mark

If it ain’t tha man that’s more concerned about Xbox and Microsoft than their own fans…wuzzup Blacky. Lol

  • Eliezer Barreto

Lol only halo wars 2 coming first quarter jajaja and nothing confirm for the second so power without games.

    • Troy Marcel

You do realise MS doesn’t announce games to pad their line up as coming soon.

    • paul rolland

Err yes they do Both do

    • Mr Xrat

      Scalebound.
      Crackdown 3.
      Cuphead.
      Fable Legends.
      Quantum Break.

      Want me to go on?

    • SHEEKEN6969

MS doesnt announce games with a promise that they might make it out before the year ends like Sony does. The titles that MS announces are those that are ready to be released. But hey i would rather stick to Halo Wars 2 while you stick to Sony’s hopes of a game releasing this year. Continue waiting for greatness sir. BUT i wouldnt hold my breath though. Cause it might not release any time soon.

    • Mr Xrat

      Scalebound.
      Crackdown 3.
      Cuphead.
      Fable Legends.
      Quantum Break.

How does Phil Spencer’s taint taste?

    • Tactical Lag-fighting tips

      Hasn’t scale bound been cancelled?
Crackdown’s delayed to be on Scorpio as it’s rumoured to
be another salty 720p sub 30fps DX12 embarrassment.

Quantum Break…..well at least DX12 helped it from been sub HD like 680p like Titan fall 2 and Ark.
Still a burly mess with a forced TV show to just like.

    • Hackeysacked

      Scalebound has not been canceled.
You are ignorant microsoft promised all their 1st party games will be 4k.
Quantum Break was a unique and great game give it a try rather than hating on it.

    • Triton

      Forza has become annual.
Crackdown 3 comes late 2017, so is Scalebound.

  • Psionicinversion

“Scorpio will have literally one of the newest, most advanced CPU chipsets within it, and far beyond most gaming PCs on the market”

ummm lol nope we still have to see if it can at least match up to intels kabylake clock for clock which is doubtful. just because AMD has made a cpu that doesnt suck anymore doesnt mean its the most advanced in the slightest. Just means they can finally give intel a run for its money

    • Mark

      True

  • Riggybro

Using Ryzen architecture can just mean using a 2 ghz Ryzen CPU designed for a laptop/tablet.

In the same way that using the latest Pascal architecture can mean a downclocked/disabled GTX 1050.

We’ve been through all this before with PS4/XB1.
    Cost and heat are paramount.

    • Mr Xrat

Shush, stop being reasonable, you’ll cause an Xgimp riot.

    • Mark

Yes true. It won’t be a darn desktop CPU running at 3.4 Ghz. My interest is more with the architectural changes and gains from ZEN.

    • Tactical Lag-fighting tips

      Yes,
Microsoft will talk about “balance” again.
Then xfans will dance to their Kinect’s in joy and praise.

    • Jai

Kinect, you mean that thing no one uses and was/is despised by 99% of ‘xfans’?

    • Evil_Annie_2015

“We’ve been through all this before with PS4/XB1.
      Cost and heat are paramount”

You forgot to list the PS Pro along the lines of PS4 and XB1… 🙂

    • Jai

True, but this time a colossal boob like Don Mattrick isn’t in charge.

  • Evil_Annie_2015

I guess it simply means that the Scorpio will be the machine for those who don’t want Mickey Mouse stuff like Checkerboarding and Secret Sauce which power the PS Pro..:)

    • This Guy

I love how they defend checkerboarding. It’s like a 4k version of dynamic res. When you’re not moving it looks good, but when the action starts it gets blurry.

    • Evil_Annie_2015

They hated upscaling, but now they love it just because Marc Cerny told them that checkerboarding is a better “type” of upscaling..:)

I don’t really care much for resolution because frame rate is most important in my opinion, however since Sony themselves Injected the argument of “extra” pixels in their fanboys, well when scorpio is relased they will die by their own sword..hehe

  • Cenk Algu

It ist nice to See the Sony Fans scared

“Do you hear it Mr.Anderson? This is the Sound of inevitability”

    • Mr Xrat

Hey Kronk, tell us about DX12 again.

    • This Guy

Shouldn’t you be bothering congress for wall money right now or something?

    • Hackeysacked

The Scorpio is going to be impressive without a doubt. Microsoft is always innovating.

  • Jai

The console/PC fanboyism in the comments here is hilarious. Yeah, the competition is objectively bad, the one you bought is objectively good, and anyone who disagrees with you is an idiot. 🙂
