Xbox One X Is A More Relevant Purchase Down The Line, Right Now It’s Too Expensive – Pachter

‘An Xbox One X costs as much as an Xbox One S and PS4 Slim combined- why would you buy a One X instead of a One S, and a PS4 to go with it too?

The Xbox One X is, hopefully, going to help Microsoft regain some advantage in the console wars- that is how the narrative goes. After all, it will be a more powerful system than the competition, and being able to play multiplatform games better should give it some leg off, right? Even if its exclusive situation remains problematic?

Wed bush Securities analyst Michael Pachter certainly does not think so. In an interview with GamingBolt, he noted that the high price of the Xbox One X prevents it from getting any kind of meaningful market penetration. ‘I don’t think so at this price, I think it’s too expensive,’ he said. ‘And everything is relative obviously, and you always hear these false equivalencies about what things cost… so you’ll hear things like “Xbox One X is cheaper than a big screen TV”, but my big screen TV will be useful for 10 years or more, and when I am done with it, it’ll still find use in my guest bedroom.

‘So I think $500 is a lot, and I think we’ve been trained since at least the PlayStation, and probably since before then – I don’t actually remember what the NES was at launch – that $300 is the price point people are willing to pay. And Microsoft started this $400 price point with the Xbox 360, Sony of course made the mistake of pricing the PS3 at $600. PS4 was $400,and quickly dropped to $300… I just think people are willing to pay $300 for a console, but not $500, $500 is way too much. And given that you frequently see Xbox One S and PS4 Slim discounted to $249, or at $299 with a good game bundled, the perceived price for both is $250, regardless of the sticker price.’

He did mention that the Xbox One X is technically a future proofed purchase… but that just drives its price point higher, since those who want to leverage its 4K capabilities will also have to buy a 4KTV to go with it, which drives its effective cost further upwards.

‘An Xbox One X costs as much as an Xbox One S and PS4 Slim combined- so if you don’t have an Xbox One yet, any kind, why would you buy a One X instead of a One S, and a PS4 to go with it too? I just don’t get it. I don’t think they are doing themselves any favour at this price point. I know they are selling the appeal of 4K, but let’s be real, probably fewer than 10% of US households have a 4KTV, and certainly way less than that in any other developed country. So who is waiting for this? Next year, maybe around the end of 2017, we’ll probably be closer to 20% US households, and 10% for the rest of the world. And by the end of 2018, we’ll probably be at 35% and 20% respectively, and by 2019, we’ll probably be at 50% and 30%. So yes, it’s a more relevant purchase down the line, but… at $500, if I had only that money in my pocket, and I had to choose between an Xbox One X and a 4KTV, I wold buy a 4K TV. So, they’re only appealing to people who have $1100, because they have to buy a TV as well. This is the same problem Oculus faced. I really think the Xbox One X will not do well.’

Well it must be indie games that no one buys because no ps4 exclusive has managed to hit the top selling spot this year. The best selling one hzd was outsold by Ghost Recon.lol

  • Eddie Battikha

Thr problem Microsoft has selling Xbox One X at $499 is that 3 years later they’ll have a new system out, 2 things they just cant get right are their Sales Price and First Party Exclusives.

  • Eddie Battikha

I switched from Xbox to Playstation because of the huge First Party Exclusives difference the quality and quanity are a night and day difference, how Xbox doesnt have a legit licensed MLB game is quite embarrassing. I was always annoyed with the Xbox Controller when i had the 360 that it ran on batterys and had a horrible dpad for fighting games and both issues haven’t changed.

  • QUIMICOMORTAL

Why? I have better 2017 video games than you! In the best console available! You don’t!

    I win!

    • wobblypops46

Says who? You? Get outa here with bs Metacritic scores. smh

  • QUIMICOMORTAL

I your retarded excuses are irrelevant! I only wanted to establish xbone exclusives are inferior in quality and quantity.

With an x bot like you so ashamed to name them, that has been accomplished!

    I win.

Pachter? Who cares what he say? He everytime told bullshit and does not know anything about technology. Why does gamingbolt.com makes an interniew with him?

Yes I have! using you as an example! xbone lineup is pathetic and its x bots are pathetic!

    THANK YOU!

im Pachter im going to look at a $500 price tag vs a $400 price tag and say its to expensive right now…now give me the money since i told you this….

i need his job.i wish i could get paid for spouting stupidity like him.

  • QUIMICOMORTAL

I have established xbone and it’s x bots are pathetic!

You have established you are a salty imbecile!

    Two points:
One. Five hundred dollars is a lot to pay for a four year old generation console (especially when in two/three years Microsoft will [almost guaranteed] release the next generation system).

Two. If you are picking the XBOX One X up now with plans to get a 4K television in a year or so why not wait and buy both then (in that year or so) when the price of the X1X drops—or gets replaced with the next XBOX 1 X 2?

BONUS: It would suck to get burnt by being an early adopter of this impressively powerful console only to have to drop another five Benjies in 2019/2020.

    • Eddie Battikha

Fall 2020 for sure as PS5 is Fall 2019, Sony and Microsoft are switching to 3 year refresh cycles. Xbox has no chance as PlayStation has and ALWAYS will have the Sales, Fanbase and Exclusives.

  • YOUDIEMOFO

Yup….., so then you’ll be buying utter garbage for a cheaper price…

Just face it. They messed up “again” and will have to drop the price a hundred dollars immediately as systems will not sell.

I personally have always sais that if they cam out swinging at less than $500 I’d buy one just because. This is to much for an “incremental” upgrade that will only lose its luster 2-3 years down the road just in time for the next bigger and shinier “box….”

I really don’t understand the animosity here. Owning both systems is a relatively low cost option, I’ve seen them on eBay and Craigslist for sub $200 prices. I’m pretty excited to see the back and forth with more powerful consoles on each end and so should everyone else. The PS4 Pro was pretty bada$$ when it came out and now the One X is bada$$.

Without competition the market stagnates, we need Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo to keep upping the ante or we (the consumers) will be the ones getting hurt.
Yes, Xbox is coming in second place since their failed/jacked up/idiotic launch. When you are looking at 30 million devices sold, that is in no way a loss. The online experience with 30 million people vs. 60 million people is absolutely transparent to the end user.

I love the PS4 exclusives just like I love the Xbox exclusives. I’m not a Japanese game fan so my opinion should be taken with a grain of salt. HZD, Drake, and The Last of Us are just phenomenal games and are worth the cost of the system alone IMO. Just like GoW, Halo, and the Forza series are for Xbox.

Being a previous PC gamer I can attest that we never talked crap about gamers with cheaper systems, it’s idiotic at best and hurtful at worst. The One X is truly a marvel of engineering and for the first time in console history is on par with a decently spec’d PC (GTX1070 with 16GB or RAM) and with future optimizations with developers it will only get better. This should be a glorious time for all of us as Sony will have to answer the One X with their next console and things will only get better.

Please don’t speak from ignorance. The One X has a Jaguar based CPU…as in, it started as a Jaguar core and has been so thoroughly optimized and changed that it no longer even resembles where it came from. The Xbox has also been optimized for every major game engine on the market and DX12 has been offloaded to a hardware chip, taking away something like 26% of the CPU load. There are other details and changes that boggle the mind and would take many pages of text to get into.
The Pro is a killer machine but still doesn’t do native 4k. Comparing the two is apples to oranges spec wise, the Pro just wasn’t meant to compete with the One X. That doesn’t make it a bad system, it’s still a beast, but the One X is truly the top dog at this point. Just like PC gamers, upgrade your graphics card if you want…or not. $500 for a system that games like a 1070 with 16GB of RAM is a phenomenal deal and if you’re b!tching about it…well, drink some more haterade and stew in it. I’ll be gaming on the most powerful system, regardless of who is making it at the time.
