9. Souls Series
While Dark Souls is officially a “spiritual sequel” to Demon’s Souls, they’re similar enough to be regarded as games of a single franchise- or again, a meta-franchise. Known for their nightmare-inducing difficulty levels, the two RPGs developed by From Software are widely regarded- in an age when games are shifting more towards casual and mainstream audiences- as the sort of games any true, hardcore gamer would enjoy, with a perfect mixture of old school and modern features. While they start slow, both games go on to reward the player heavily with some truly memorable experiences.
