Metal Gear Solid for the original PlayStation is widely regarded as the game that brought tactical espionage action into the spotlight. This Konami-developed 1998 game sees players controlling Solid Snake as he infiltrates enemy encampments and fights extremely creative and memorable bosses. The layered and complex narrative is intriguing, and the gameplay is dynamic – offering players quite the leeway in how they choose to go about their business. You can go in guns blazing, you can hide from enemies in cardboard boxes, and so much more. The visuals and the game’s pretty short length might be antiquated by modern standards, but the supporting elements are still a cut above many contemporaries of the genre.
