Following the unprecedented success of the original, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty was released in 2001 for the PlayStation 2. Kojima took a huge risk by switching protagonists, which did cause a fair bit of controversy amongst the fan community but was eventually appreciated for all its merits. Taking place on a tanker and later on the Plant, Metal Gear Solid 2 features markedly better gameplay, all presented in pristine visual quality. The narrative touched untimely themes such as the spread of misinformation through the use of public channels like the internet – a rarity for games at the time.
