Anthem
Anthem’s handling of its world continues to be a lesson in how not to design action games and RPGs. Your instance in Fort Tarsis is purely solo, meaning no other players can wander around (unless they hang out in the social hub but no one did that because it was pitifully useless). The actual open world comes from entering Freeplay through a poorly designed menu and flying around. At first, it’s kind of cool – that feeling of soaring through the air, flying close to the water to cool your jets and extend air time. Sadly, most of the gameplay simply involved shooting the same dull enemies, opening chests and partaking in a random event or two (like fighting the Ash Titans). That was it – “barebones” doesn’t even do it justice, not that the missions which sent you out into the world were much to write home about either.
