GW – Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty

The question is, where has the fission been mailed to?

Metal Gear Solid 2 had a pretty crazy ending. That’s a nice way of saying that it was rambling, incoherent and made no sense at all. That said, it was the first time we were introduced to GW, the AI who takes the form of Roy Campbell throughout the game. And no, I don’t mean the real Colonel Campbell from MGS1. Yeah, GW shows up in more important roles in later games, but the first encounter in Arsenal Gear is what people really remember.

ROB – NES Peripheral

Ok, so ROB (Robotic Operating Partner) never really worked all that well, but it was one of those things where the idea alone was good enough to cement this AI companion in popular gaming culture. Even though it’s not likely to be used for its primary function any time soon, the memory lives through his inclusion in a variety of other Nintendo franchises.

AM – I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream

Created as a master computer by the three major superpowers of the world, the AI called AM from Harlan Ellison’s I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream made a needed appearance in the game adaptation of this sci-fi classic. Of all the evil AIs on this list, AM takes the crown. Not only does he eradicate the human race at his earliest opportunity, but he also keeps just five humans alive so that he can personally torture them for all eternity. The real kicker? His malice comes from the flawed morality of those that created him. Check out just one of his malicious hate speeches in the video above.  Not only is AM the most sinister AI on this list, but he’s also a reflection of the flaws within humanity itself. Bummer eh?
