The Director – Left 4 Dead series
Though not a character as such, the AI director in Left 4 Dead is every bit as malicious as some of its characterised counterparts. It doesn’t need a name or personality, it just needs to stop you in your tracks, and man does it succeed. Every single time, in either Left 4 Dead game, the director spawns a horde or tank right when you least expect it. What a jerk.
Cortana – Halo series
Though Cortana is responsible for mandatory and frustratingly slow audio breaks in Halo 3, (not to mention some rather disturbing fan art across the web) she remains a memorable sidekick in spite of these issues. We can forgive you Cortana, if only because of how captivating your sassy attitude and quality voice acting have been for so many years.
Any Transformer – Transformers War for/Fall of Cybertron
It’s not even necessary to specify an individual Transformer for this entry. They’re sentient robots that can turn into cars and planes. That’s possibly one of the all time greatest ideas for a franchise ever. They even have their own societies that they fight for and over, in the surprisingly good Cybertron games released this generation.
Dog – Half-Life 2
A dog is normally meant to be man’s best friend, but this particular canine companion belonged to Alex Vance in Half-Life 2. Merging an adorable and slavishly loyal pet with a massively powerful robotic exoskeleton makes Dog’s character design instantly recognisable. It also sets up a few memorable moments throughout the various episodes of Half-Life 2. We can only hope he’ll keep taking his place centre stage in Half-Life 3; if it ever comes out that is.
