Ice/ Frozen Wasteland
Another videogame level cliche that originates from Mario, the frozen level used be incredibly exciting in platformers, because the slippery ice floor would inevitably not provide any traction, and would make precise platforming and control tough. And while it made sense- and still does- in platformers like Mario and Ratchet and Clank, it’s its abundant overusage in some other kinds of games that really puzzles the mind. For instance, why must every single fantasy game have an ice dungeon (Again, Zelda is probably to blame for this one)? Why do shooters like Modern Warfare 2 have ice levels? I mean, I have no problems with them,l the levels are nice, and they often provide for great set-pieces, meaning the novelty factor is great. But then, how can there be any novelty if every single video game on the market features the same setting?
