World War II
Once upon a time, every single non Halo/non PC shooter on the market was a World War II shooter. You could bet on that, it was like a rule of the thumb. Medal of Honor, Call of Duty, Battlefield, Wolfenstein, you name it. The setting was incredibly overused and tired, and while gamers might get a thrill of anticipation at the idea of fighting in historically significant battles like the Battle of Normandy, there’s only many times you could fight the same fight over and over before you’d get tired, right? Thankfully, this setting died a
much deserved death early this generation, thanks to EA s***wing Medal of Honor up beyond belief, and thanks to Battlefield and Call of Duty moving their conflicts to modern eras. While we still get the odd WWII shooter- the last prominent example was World at War- they feel a bit fresher, and more exciting, because WWII stories are not more significantly
spaced out. I do think that the World Wars should be revisited, though. Not necessarily World War II, how about the incredibly underused World War I setting though?
