Earthbound – Giygas’ Theme

In a game filled with as much charm and wit as Earthbound, it’s surprising that it is also capable of spawning pure malice as its final boss. Giygas has now become a legendary final boss, with countless essays written about how he apparently resembles a foetus. Absurd speculation aside, he is accompanied by some pretty eerie music. With all sorts of unusual rhythms and timbres, Giygas’ theme is much like the boss itself: Frightening in its unpredictability.

Silent Hill 2 – Pyramid Head Theme

We’ve had a fair few horror related top tens here on Gamingbolt over the years, and Pyramid head seems to pop up somewhere in all of them. Why? Because he’s bloody scary, that’s why! Even his music is chilling to the core, perfectly capturing the ambient mechanical noises and sparse dissonance that characterises Akira Yamaoka’s haunting soundscapes. Let’s just hope the upcoming Silent Hill: Downpour will even prove half as frightening without his masterful melodies.

Front Mission 3

I honestly don’t know what it is about the single droning high note, but it sends chills down my spine every time I hear it. Front Mission 3 was a game full of charming mech fantasy stylings, but the soundtrack was as varied and engaging as the best of them. Staying away from the usual sci-fi cliche’s, Front Mission 3 created an often horrifying and isolated tone. Sometimes it is truly a battle of one man and his wanzer against the world.
