Genre Saturation:
What’s the most popular MMO genre out there now? Without a doubt it has to be the Fantasy genre. Even before the days of WoW games like Everquest dominated. While there is an undeniable level of entertainment to be had by throwing lightning bolts at someone as a Mage, what ends up happening though is the homogenization of these games.
Everything starts to feel the same from game-to-game. In some ways it is the flip side of the coin that comes from the lack of innovation, but much more specific to the world that has been chosen for the game. At the same time though, developers want to make something that’s going to sell, since in the past, games that have been made outside the Fantasy genre have struggled to gain traction, though for more complicated reasons that not being a fantasy game.
