Killzone 2’s pre-rendered trailer

Killzone 2 E3 2005

Ah, pre-rendered trailers. Nowadays disclaimers like ‘not actual gameplay footage’ are required so we, as cash paying consumers, can distinguish if what we’re seeing is genuine, but not so in 2005 when Sony unveiled Killzone 2’s official trailer at E3 stating categorically that the footage shown was “running in real time on PlayStation 3.” Guerrilla knew this wasn’t the case. The footage supplied to Sony was a proof-of-concept if anything. Still, Guerrilla didn’t think anyone would believe it was real; however, they did… in their droves. Guerilla clarified in 2008 that the footage at least wasn’t fake; it was created with PlayStation 3’s capability in mind. But transparency from them and Sony back in 2005 would have been appreciated even though the finished game turned out to be a graphical marvel, its legacy as one of the best-looking games of the PS3 generation intact.
