Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

Hailed as one of the greatest video games ever made, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater sought to shake up the formula that the franchise had been known for. Instead of closed levels with linear paths, it’s set in Tselinoyarsk with the wide outdoor environment providing more freedom to explore than ever. A stamina gauge, injuries and treatments, scavenging and hunting animals for food, and the removal of the radar encouraged more guerrilla-style tactics.

Utilizing camouflage to blend in with the environment while climbing trees and employing CQC take down foes became more important. Throw in Kojima’s attention to detail, such as stamina depleting faster at higher altitudes, and it’s no wonder that Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater has stood the test of time (to say nothing of its excellent narrative and characterization).
