What Happens Inside a Pokeball?

Another Pokémon mystery surrounds the series main trainer tool: the Pokéball. What happens inside those magic spheres after they suck the small monsters inside of them? Maybe they are frozen in a stasis, or perhaps each Pokeball has a comfy abode for the creature to dwell in while they wait for battle. All we now is that they disappear inside the ball at the end of a battle and are ready for the next scrap when it rolls around.
