Ghosts and Goblins, and similar NES era games
Very much a product of their time, games in the NES Era were limited in space and would usually make up for it with a holdover from the arcade – incredible difficulty. But the simple fact of being a home based machine allowed many retro gamers to persevere. Ghosts and Goblins takes the main dishonour here because it asked players to run through the entire game twice to see it, but it’s hardly the only game of that generation to reward days and months of hard work and skill with a poorly translated “Congratulations” screen.
