6. Shadow of the Colossus – A beautiful tribulation.
This game moved people. It was beautiful, adventurous, often brain wrenching with its puzzles and definitely heart wrenching with what it made us do. It was like conventional games on many levels and it wasn’t. Set in a fantasy world, we hunt colossi. Why the game had us thinking whether we were possessed by some heartless hell spawn or turning into a cold blooded murder was because the game had us killing colossi, for no apparent reason whatsoever! For someone’s selfish gains to collect a part of their essence.
These colossi are not like those abominable ugly manifestations of devilry who threaten to wipe out you, your family, your dog, your stuffed animal and the entire human race because they love blood puddles. No. They just sit there calmly and don’t even notice you until you go around poking. It was a beautifully crafted game, but every moment of playing had us doubting our conscience and moral upbringing. Task or no task, killing colossi was never justified to us. Especially the second one. Probably never will be.
