SUPER MARIO ODYSSEY
Super Mario has never been a series that rests on its laurels, with almost every new mainline instalment introducing some major new mechanic that twists the series’ established formula in exciting ways. Super Mario Odyssey probably did that to a far greater extent than any of its predecessors. Taking a ridiculously ambitious idea and somehow actually making it work exactly the way it should isn’t something that many games can claim to have successfully done, but Super Mario Odyssey does it so confidently that you almost end up taking its sheer ingenuity, its unbridles creativity, and its absolute mastery for granted. Many Mario games have been called the best platformer ever made, and to varying degrees, they’ve all deserved that praise. Odyssey probably deserves it more than most, if not all. That we feel like we still haven’t praised it enough, in spite of gushing over it as much as we have, should tell you something about how unbelievably good this game is.
