GOD OF WAR (2018)

Speaking of spectacular reinventions of widely beloved franchises, the 2018 God of War soft reboot (which is really just a flat-out direct sequel) also took the industry by storm. It was a game that succeeded on many levels- breathing life into a dying franchise? Check. Sticking the landing with its many ambitious gameplay and story ideas? Check. Respecting the series’ past and building on it in a meaningful way? Check. Simultaneously making all of that happen may have seemed like an insurmountable challenge on paper, but God of War was up to the task, and then some. Much like Kratos, it was a game that was hellbent on making the impossible happen- and much like Kratos, it did so with brutal efficiency.
