HOLLOW KNIGHT

In spite of being a game that was made by a team that doesn’t even number in the double digits and having a budget that was a fraction of most other games in this list had, Hollow Knight still stands toe-to-toe with each and every one of them. Exploration, level design, progression, combat, platforming, boss fights- these are, more often than not, the traits that define the Metroidvania genre, and Hollow Knight sticks the landing in each of those areas. Being held in the same regard as something like Super Metroid is no small praise, but Hollow Knight deserves it without the shadow of a doubt.
