FMV Cutscenes
At the start of the 3D era, when games were becoming bigger, and more epic, testing the limits of what a game could be, the Full Motion Video cutscene was the best way to show off the cinematic moments that games couldn’t pull off in engine. The problem was that the rendering back then was still very young, and most games didn’t have the budget to shore up the cutscenes when the game was the important part, resulting in nightmare fuel like you see all over the PlayStation. Technology caught up quickly, making PS2 era cutscenes look better and finally many games could simply opt to go in engine by the time the PS3 and 360 rolled around, cutting out the middleman altogether.
