METAL GEAR SOLID 2 GAMEPLAY DEMONSTRATION – E3 2000
The PlayStation 2 is the highest selling console of all time, and probably also the best one ever. And we can probably credit Metal Gear Solid 2’s E3 2000 trailer, which did more to generate hype and excitement for the console before its release, and at the cost of Sega’s burgeoning Dreamcast, than anything else. This extended gameplay demonstration looked so incredible, so beyond anything else that had been seen until then, that many weren’t even convinced it was a game – they thought it might have been pre-rendered. But it was all real, of course, and that propelled a million imaginations with the promise of infinite possibilities for what games could become. And that incredible hype led to the PS2 launching with such strong momentum, the competition never stood a chance. In a way, you could say that Metal Gear Solid 2, which foresaw so much of the future, also did its part in causing some of it for gaming by all but ensuring the PS2 would become dominant.
