Like Halo 2, arguments can be made for another Metro game to be on this list instead of Exodus, but what Exodus does so well – moving it beyond its predecessors – is instil the same sense of creeping dread across more varied terrain. Taking things above ground does nothing to alleviate the tension the series is famed for. The game’s eschewing of supernatural themes, instead focusing on the human element, made the story more emotionally impactful too. This might not be your favourite, but Metro Exodus arguably distilled 2033 and Last Light’s promise to create something memorable.
