The Order: 1886
If there’s a pitfall to an emphasis of cinematic cutscenes and movie-like production, it’s the potential for freedom and control to be taken away from the player. So, whilst The Order: 1886 harboured astonishing cinematic presentation – film grain, depth of field, soft focus – filmic effects which still hold up today, the actual gameplay elements and their design were incredibly tight. Very little assets were wasted in the game’s highly curated corridors, any openness an afterthought behind cinematography.
