Auto Scrolling

What’s worse than being on a level for the first time, not knowing what’s on the next screen and making leaps of faith? Another 2D disaster is the auto scrolling screen levels. Most infamously adopted in Mario games, (but do not
get me wrong– they are in plenty of other games as well) auto scrolling comes when the players character starts out on said level, moves about an inch forward and the screen proceeds to continue moving forward with or without the character. This seems like all fun and games, but many of these levels involve wide open spaces that need to be jumped, several enemies, and moving platforms. Jumping from one platform to another that isn’t exactly on screen yet can be mind numbing and require several do-overs.
