Yes, Super Mario Odyssey isn’t technically an open world game, but as anyone who’s played it and experienced its expertly crafted sandboxes will tell you, it absolutely deserves a place on this list. This game is pure, distilled joy, defined by unbounded creativity. Each crevice and corner of Mario Odyssey’s many kingdoms is crammed full of things to see and interact with, and those interactions never fail to surprise and delight players.
