Open-World Games With Large Empty Spaces Are Bland
One common complaint that’s emerged over the years is just how lifeless some open-world games can be. Sure, they’re big but there’s a certain vibrancy that’s lacking. This doesn’t necessarily result in bland gameplay. It all falls on how the game utilizes that space and fits it into the story. Shadow of the Colossus, for example, has very large wide open spaces devoid of quests, NPCs and so on. But the gameplay is extremely compelling because the main hook – taking down the Colossi – works wonderfully with the world design.
