Spencer used to be her student, and the symbols that he saw in the village served as the inspiration for the name and logo of Umbrella Corporation. In the note that reveals all that, Spencer also mentions that he’s discovered a special virus strain in Africa called the “Progenitor virus”, which, of course, is the virus that Umbrella uses to create the T-Virus in the first place (and pretty much every other virus in the Resident Evil universe that follows from that).
