SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS
Even back in 2005, coming from the team that that made Ico, Shadow of the Colossus being as good as it was wasn’t necessarily a surprise. But on paper, a game like that shouldn’t work. It’s a desolate open world that doesn’t give players much to do by design, and other that the boss fights, there’s no combat whatsoever- and even the boss fights are more traversal puzzles and challenges than combat encounters. It was a bold and unique vision- but boy did they pull it off.
