STRUCTURAL AND NARRATIVE DEPARTURE FROM PREVIOUS GAMES IN THE SERIES

This should be pretty clear by now, but Pokemon Sun/Moon are going to be a total departure from anything that has come so far in the series. The gyms are gone, meaning the traditional underlying structure of the games is no longer keeping things predictable, and the games also look set to be more narrative heavy this time around. The exploits of the local Team Skull appear to be different than the world conquering/ending shenanigans that have usually defined Pokemon villains, while the Aether Foundation skulks enigmatically in the background, their true role unknown. Then there are the Ultra Beasts- superpowerful beings that appear to emerge from interdimensional rifts, but are not Pokemon. There’s a lot going on in Sun/Moon, and for once, we won’t know the full story of Pokemon beforehand thanks to its sheer adherence to structure.
