NO GYMS

Perhaps the biggest, boldest departure from series norms that Sun/Moon promise is that they will move away from the traditional ‘win eight gym badges, challenge the Pokemon League’ structure that has defined the games ever since Red/Green came out back in 1996. Instead, the games seem to be a bit more story focused this time, focusing on Alola, the region the games take place in, as well as Alola’s local customs. Players have to participate in a vast, elaborate coming of age ceremony, which is what results in their engaging with the Pokemon world. Instead of gyms, Pokemon Sun/Moon has you face off against powerful, legendary guardian Pokemon that are supposed to watch over the islands in the Alola region, resulting in more dynamic and tense boss battles than the series has had in a very long time.
