It’s not just the narrative and structure that is getting an overhaul with Pokemon Sun/Moon– the mechanics are getting a good shakeup too. HMs, long the bane of every Pokemon player, are now gone. Instead, Pokemon naturally have abilities that perform the same functions- so you can ride on a Charizard to fly to wherever you want to be, surf on a Sharpedo to traverse water, and ride on a strong Pokemon that can smash rocks for you. It’s a more meaningful gating of progress in the world, that stays true to the flavor of the series, and doesn’t require players to waste slots in their teams or move pools just so they are assured that they will be able to traverse the overworld without any hindrance.
