SUPER MARIO 3D WORLD
A mainline Super Mario game can never be underrated, so in absolute terms, it feels weird to include Super Mario 3D World on a list such as this one. But in the very specific and very unique context of the Super Mario series, 3D World really is quite often overlooked. Fans of the series weren’t happy that the next mainline console Mario game was just expanding on the ideas of 3D Land, nor were they too happy with the game’s focus on co-op- the fact that it was a Wii U title did it no favours either. But if you’ve played the game, you know that it deserves much more attention than it got. It’s constantly inventive, consistently fun, and has some of the best, tightest level design this series has ever seen. Here’s hoping Nintendo brings the game over to the Switch soon to give people another chance to recognize its excellence.
