FMV CUTSCENES
It was around the time that the N64 and the original PlayStation took the world by storm with what was at the time groundbreaking technology for home consoles that games really started to experiment with how they told their stories. With the added benefit of polygonal 3D, after all, the medium had become more adept at storytelling than ever before. Some developers – too many, in fact – decided that those polygonal graphics weren’t good enough, and decided to use full motion video cutscenes (or FMV) in their games. And while it seemed excellent at the time, overtime, it just started to take people out of the experience. Using either live action footage or CGI, the cutscenes were hugely immersion breaking in a lot of instances (though admittedly, some games did use them to great effect). Thankfully, FMV cutscenes have become almost an extinct breed now.
