The RPG that went on sale in Japan just before Holiday ’09, and then earlier this year in Europe and the US, has sold more than 5 million units.

At the end of Square Enix’s fiscal year ending 31 March 2010, 5.5 million units had been shipped.

The RPG went on sale in Japan first last year selling 1.85 million units. It later went on sale in early March of this year in the west, with the US outselling Europe by 1.79 million copies to the latter’s 1.77 million.

The developer’s full selling breakdown is below.

  • Final Fantasy XIII – 5.55 million units
  • Dragon Quest IX – 4.26 million units (Japan alone)
  • Batman: Arkham Asylum – 3.24 million units
  • Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days – 1.49 million units
  • Dragon Quest VI – 1.29 million units
  • Just Cause 2 – 0.92k units
  • Dissidia: Final Fantasy – 0.82k units (Japanese LtD sales – 1.81 million units)

In related news, Final Fantasy XIII Versus is under construction, and may be heading for a multiplatform release.

Despite all press, official announcements and trailers pointing to to FFXIII Versus being a PS3 exclusive, Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada has said that the possibility for a multiplatform release is being considered.

Wada said, “”We’ll be looking into it internally until right before the formal announcement.”

Presumably, ‘formal announcement’ refers to a proper unveiling of Final Fantasy XIII Versus, which could hopefully roll around at E3.
