Alone in the Dark
Before there was Resident Evil, there was Alone in the Dark. Released in 1992, the first game is considered a pioneer in 3D survival horror. Set in a haunted mansion, players control either Edward Carnby or Emily Hartwood and must escape. Emphasizing puzzle-solving, exploration and investigation, Alone in the Dark succeeded in crafting a scary atmosphere despite the limitations of its hardware. A shame, then, that the newer titles effectively sullied its reputation.
