10. Fallout: New Vegas
Fallout: New Vegas gets a lot of undeserved hate. People say it recycled almost everything from Fallout 3, offered little new features, and had most of the glitches and bugs that broke the previous installment in the series (to an extent). But in our opinion, and in yours too, hopefully, New Vegas was better than Fallout 3 in almost every way possible… except for the “War never changes” monologue. It had more quests, a better story, more focus of narrative and it was, overall, a more engaging experience. It’s a game that you have to buy, no matter which of the three HD systems you own.
9. Heavy Rain
Some people might not like a lot of QTE in their games, but it is very rare to see such risky games being made nowadays. If you have played a Quantic Dreams’ game before, you would know exactly what to expect from it. It can be described as a movie that gives you a lot of suspense moments and thrills, and you don’t have to sweat over it that much, because the gameplay is simple.
8. God of War III
God of War III is the pinnacle of everything God of War. Violence? Check. Over the top brutality? Check. Cinematic cutscenes? Check. Kratos’ badassery? Check. Excellent boss fights? Check. Great level design? Check. Epic scope? Check. Bludgeoning gods to and pounding them with your gauntleted fists until they die? Ch-fucking-eck. God of War III sure did not wrap up things the way God of War II fans would have wanted it to, but no one should be foolish enough to think it was in any way a bad game. If you miss out on this game, it’d be on your own head.
7. Assassin’s Creed II
The leap between Assassin’s Creed and Assassin’s Creed II was prettyhuge. Ubisoft listened to the feedback of disgruntled gamers who loved the Assassin’s Creed but were fed up with the said repetitiveness. What you will find here is an amazing game with an equally amazing protagonist. This is one adventure like none other.
6. LittleBigPlanet
When this generation ends, LittleBigPlanet will be remembered as one of the few games that actually tried something new, actually innovated, and did what it did with near perfection. The Play, Create, Share feature was absolutely excellent, and though it had been seen in video games before LBP, Media Molecule’s charming platformer did it better than we could have ever imagined, revolving an entire game around the concept. Sure, the platforming of… well, this platformer was a little off, but the other features more than made up for the few niggles LBP had.
5. Red Dead Redemption
It’s a majestic Rockstar game that puts you in the shoes of John Marston, one of the most likable characters they have created. The game is set in the Wild West, and there are plenty of twists and turns here. The PS3 version isn’t that technically proficient compared to the 360 one but it is a fantastic game that should not be missed.
4. Mass Effect 2
Damn, I really hate it when I have to write anything about Mass Effect 2 in less than 3000 words, just because there’s too much to say. Let me tell you- Mass Effect 2 is one of my favourite games ever, and there’s not one fault in the entire game that is big enough to ruin the experience. What part of the game should I praise that hasn’t already been praised? The story, the characters, the element of choice, the mortality, the combat… we already know just how excellent this game is. So let’s do me a favour and not talk about this anymore. I’ll just say one more thing- play it, goddammit.
3. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
No one expected Naughty Dog to improve upon Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune so much. This game is a revelation. A massive improvement in every way, in every area imaginable and also featured a great multiplayer component. It took everyone by surprise as to how good it was. It is still regarded as one of the best looking games this gen. If you have a PS3, then this game should be in your collection.
2. Demon’s Souls
Yes, we do think Demon’s Souls deserves to be so high on this list, and yes, we do think it’s better than the other games on this list. So don’t start with comments like “Demon’s Souls above XYZ? Seriously?” Because yes, we’re dead serious. Demon’s Souls is highly underrated, and it definitely did not sell as much as it should have. It’s the kind of game I like- old school, basing its strengths on nothing but gameplay. Not pretenses like a good story or cinematic cutscenes or anything, just awesome gameplay. The combat is great, the difficulty level is extremely rewarding and the boss battles are a treat. It was hard not to place this game on the top spot, really.
1. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
And on top of the list is Metal Gear Solid 4, and rightfully so. This game came at a time when the PS3 needed system seller exclusives. It is a fantastic game, and if you are a MGS fan, it’s a must play. There may be more innovative games on the system but this takes the top spot due to how memorable the entire experience was. Whenever you look back at PS3’s legacy, you’ll remember this game.
