7 Settings In Video Games That Ought To Be Used More

Westerns

There have only been a few western based games, Red Dead Redemption being one of those few, and it almost feels like a crime to have such a wonderful setting and not use it to its fullest potential. Of course, after Red Dead Redemption, there have been a few attempts at the setting, but they’ve mostly sucked, like Call of Juarez: The Cartel. It’s surprising, really, because the wild west can be an absolutely brilliant setting for a game, providing for atmosphere, great visuals, rich story and setting and some great mechanics. Lets hope that future Red Dead games aren’t the only ones that make good use of this setting.

Post Nuclear War

By this, I don’t mean a post apocalyptic setting in a world that’s been ravaged and has mutants in it. No, we have had enough of those games by now. What I want to see is a game that’s set directly after a nuclear war- and by directly, I mean directly. It’s be interesting to see how the players can survive in the world on their own, and we can see a world between the nuclear war setting and the post apocalyptic setting- both of which are pretty common. It’s an interesting premise, and it’s shocking that very few have even thought of this before. Let’s hope some developers out there are reading this and making notes as they nod approvingly.

Noir

While L.A. Noire was a bit repetitive and boring at times, it was, when all was said and done, a wonderful game, an experience that no one would soon forget after having played it. But it’s disappointing that there are very few games in the noir genre, and that even fewer that are actually worth playing. Because, as L.A. Noire (and partly Deus Ex: Human Revolution) has shown so very well, noir games can be excellent, engrossing and refreshing, providing for enjoyable experiences like no other. I don’t even think there will be an L.A. Noire sequel, much less an all new noir series that’s actually noteworthy. Disappointing, really, considering the potential this genre has.

Pirates

We may not be as excited about this setting as we are about the others on this list, but we’re still pretty curious to see what developers can do with it- if any proper development team decides to do anything about it. We’ve had enough of crappy Pirates of the Caribbean games, enough of games that use the pirates stereotypes way too much, to the point that it becomes irritating. We want a proper game based on pirates, something that we can actually enjoy. Lionhead Studios would be the perfect developer for such a game, given their expertise in quirky, hilarious and well, pirate-y games (I don’t know, Fable always feels a bit pirate-y to me). But there are plenty of other developers out there who can do such a game properly. Let’s hope this actually comes true, though.
